5 sunscreen mistakes almost every Indian makes. Dermatologists say most of us are doing it wrong — even indoors.

Myth: Dark Skin Doesn't Need SPF
Melanin gives you roughly SPF 3-4. That is nowhere near enough. Indian skin still gets sun spots, melasma, and premature wrinkles from UV exposure.
Myth: No Sun = No Sunscreen
UVA rays pass through clouds, windows, and car windshields. Sitting near a window at work? Your skin is aging right now. UVA causes 80% of visible aging.
Myth: SPF 100 = Double Protection
SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays. SPF 50 blocks 98%. SPF 100 blocks 99%. The difference is tiny. What matters more is how much you apply and how often you reapply.
The Real Problem: You Apply Too Little
Dermatologists say use 2 finger lengths of sunscreen for your face alone. Most people use less than half that amount. Under-application cuts your SPF by 50-75%.
Myth: Apply Once and Forget
Sunscreen breaks down in 2-3 hours from sweat, oil, and UV exposure. If you applied at 8 AM and it is 1 PM, you have zero protection left.
Check the Label: PA Rating Matters
SPF only measures UVB protection. For UVA (the aging ray), look for PA++++. Most cheap Indian sunscreens skip UVA protection entirely.
Myth: Sunscreen Causes Breakouts
Old formulas were greasy. Modern gel and serum sunscreens are non-comedogenic. If sunscreen breaks you out, you are using the wrong type — not the wrong product category.
What Sunscreen Cannot Do
Sunscreen prevents future damage. But it cannot reverse existing sun damage — dark spots, uneven tone, dull texture. For that, you need skin repair from within.
Ayurveda's Answer: Ubtan
Turmeric, multani mitti, and masoor dal have been used for centuries to repair sun-damaged skin. Turmeric blocks melanin overproduction. Multani mitti draws out impurities.
The Science Behind Ubtan
Curcumin in turmeric inhibits tyrosinase — the enzyme that causes dark spots. Multani mitti absorbs excess oil and dead cells. Together they resurface sun-damaged skin.
The Complete Sun Strategy
Step 1: SPF 30+ sunscreen every morning. Step 2: Reapply every 2-3 hours. Step 3: Ubtan face pack twice a week to repair and brighten. Prevention plus repair.
What Experts Say
Indian dermatologists now recommend combining sunscreen with natural antioxidants like turmeric for complete protection. Sunscreen alone is not enough — you need repair too.
