Drava-dravya Vijnaniya: Where the Ashtanga Hridaya Turns to What We Drink

For four chapters, Vagbhata's great handbook has been teaching us how to live — the shape of a good day (dinacharya), the turning of the seasons (ritucharya), and the art of not falling ill in the first place (the Roganutpadaniya). Then, in the fifth chapter of the Sutrasthana, the Ashtanga Hridaya does something quietly modern: it turns from how we should live to what we should put into our bodies. The chapter is the Drava-dravya Vijnaniya Adhyaya — the “knowledge of liquid substances” — and it is the gateway to the long classical study of diet (ahara) that the next chapters carry on.

Vagbhata begins by naming the whole family of liquids he is about to survey: the groups (varga) of water (jala), milk (ksira), sugarcane (iksu), honey (madhu), oils (taila), fermented drinks (madya) and even urine (mutra), each studied for its qualities and its effect on the body's three doshas. It is a remarkably systematic table of contents for the fluids of daily life. And it is no accident that he opens, before all the others, with the simplest and most essential of them: water.

This is the heart of why these chapters reward a careful reading. The classical physicians did not treat water as a single, featureless thing. To them, where water came from, how it was processed, when in the day and the meal you drank it, and what state it was in — warm or cold, fresh or stale, clean or contaminated — all changed what it did inside you. That instinct, that the same substance can be wholesome (pathya) in one form and harmful in another, runs through the whole of Ayurveda. Nowhere is it clearer, or more useful to us today, than in this patient study of the most everyday drink there is.

One thread to follow through the whole guide

Beneath all the classifications and lists, the chapter keeps returning to a single, sane idea: drink clean water; in most cases prefer it warm; take the right amount, at the right time; and respect that water is not inert but acts on the body. The specific rules are many and a few are purely of their age — but that underlying instinct is as sound today as it was when Vagbhata set it down.

Jala Varga: The Classical Ayurvedic Map of Water

The first thing that strikes a modern reader is how many kinds of water Vagbhata distinguishes. Where we tend to say simply “water,” the Jala Varga of the Ashtanga Hridaya (Sutrasthana 5) draws a detailed map, sorting water along several axes at once. By its nature, water is of two great kinds: gangambu, pure rain that falls uncontaminated, and samudrodaka, rain that has picked up dust and impurities on the way down. By its processing, it is reckoned in several states — plain, herb-treated, boiled, raw and warmed. By the soil it sits in, it takes on six characters (from white, black and yellowish-white earth to blue, saline and mixed). And by the dominance of the five great elements (the pancha mahabhuta), water can lean earthy, watery, fiery, airy or ethereal in its qualities — the most subtle, akasha-dominant water being so neutral and clean that the text says it can stand in for rainwater itself.

Then comes the classification a thirsty traveller would actually use: water sorted by its source, of which Vagbhata names eight — koupya (well water), sarasa (a natural lake), tataka (an artificial pond), caundya (water collected in rock-pits), prasravana (water flowing down from mountains), audbhida (natural springs), vapi (a step-well) and nadi (a river). Each is given its own character: lake water is praised as sweet, light and good for the digestive power; pond water is called heavy; rock-pit water is said to disturb pitta; and so on. Finally there is akasodaka or antariksha jala — “water of the sky” — of four types: dhara (rain), ksara (hail), tausara (dew) and haima (snow-water).

It would be easy to dismiss all this as quaint over-classification. Look closer, though, and a real and modern idea is hiding inside it: not all water is the same, and its source determines its quality. The classical writers had no microscope and no chemistry, yet they had noticed, by patient observation, that water from a clean flowing spring behaves differently from water standing in a stagnant pond, that water takes on the character of the ground it sits in, and that the cleanest water of all falls fresh from the sky. We now express the same truths in the language of mineral content, dissolved solids, microbial load and turbidity. The vocabulary is utterly different; the underlying observation — judge water by where it comes from — is the same one a modern public-health engineer would make. Gangambu and Antariksha Jala: Rainwater, the “Nectar from the Sky”

Of all the waters, Vagbhata reserves his highest praise for clean rainwater — gangambu, sometimes called aindra or divya jala, the celestial water. The Ashtanga Hridaya (Sutrasthana 5) describes uncontaminated rain in almost lyrical terms: it enlivens living beings, brings satiation and pleasure to the heart, refreshes and clears the mind. It is light, cool in potency (sheeta virya), clear, and so subtle as to have no strong taste of its own — the text calls it the very equal of nectar (amrita). Because it is cooling, the classical writers traditionally associated it with calming the heat-led conditions of pitta, and they held it to settle both vata and kapha as well, making it the most balanced of all the waters.

But the most quietly astonishing passage is the one that explains where rain comes from. Vagbhata describes how water from the sea is drawn up by the rays of the sun, carried into the sky, touched by sunlight, moonlight and wind, and falls again as rain. Strip away the poetry and that is, in essence, the water cycle — evaporation, condensation and precipitation — set down many centuries before it was formalised in modern terms. The text even understands that rain is, in effect, distilled: the sea is salt, yet the rain born from it is sweet and pure, exactly as we now know evaporation leaves the salts behind. For a tradition working purely from observation, that is a genuinely remarkable piece of natural science.

The classical writers were realists, though, not romantics. They knew rain is only as clean as the sky and the season it falls through, and that water gathered carelessly is soon spoiled. So the chapter gives a charming and practical test of purity: cook rice in the water and set it in a silver bowl; if the cooked rice neither turns too slimy nor changes colour, the water is true gangambu, the best for drinking. They also tied the safety of other waters to the calendar — ordinary collected water, the text says, is best avoided for drinking outside the autumn month of Ashvayuja (around September–October), when the star Agastya (Canopus) was classically held to “clear” the waters. The astronomy belongs to its age; the instinct beneath it — that water quality changes with the season, and that fresh post-monsoon water settles and clears — is sound observation.

Gangambu, then and now

Then: clean rain was nectar — the lightest, purest, most balanced water, born when the sun lifts water to the sky and it falls again sweet; tested with rice in a silver bowl, and trusted most after the monsoon.

Now: we would call rain naturally distilled and soft, and add — importantly — that modern rain must still be filtered and treated before drinking, because today's air and collecting surfaces carry pollutants the ancients never faced. The reverence for clean, soft, fresh water is timeless; the method of making it safe has rightly moved on.

Ushna Jala: The Ayurvedic Case for Warm Water

If one idea from this chapter has travelled furthest into modern wellness, it is the classical love of ushna jala — warm or hot water. Vagbhata sets out its virtues in a tight, confident passage (Ashtanga Hridaya, Sutrasthana 5). Warm water, he says, kindles the digestive fire (it is dipana), helps cook and carry what is undigested (pachana), is easy to digest itself, soothes the throat, and cleanses the lower passages. The text traditionally recommends it across a long list of classical complaints — among them hikka (hiccough), bloating, disorders of vata and kapha, the period just after a cleansing therapy, fresh fever, kasa (cough), the ama (undigested, sticky) state, a running nose and swasa (laboured breathing). All of this is recorded here as the text's traditional view of water, not as a modern medical claim.

There is a lovely technical precision to how the ancients prepared it, too. Warm water was not simply “heated”; it was graded by how far it had been boiled down:

The more the water was reduced, the lighter and more digestible it was held to be — a graded pharmacy of warm water, matched to the season and the strength of one's digestion (agni). And tucked into the same passage is a piece of advice that sounds almost like a modern food-safety rule: boiled water should be made fresh each day and not stored. Vagbhata notes that water boiled and then kept for two or three days loses its dipana and pachana virtues and begins to aggravate all three doshas. Freshly boiled, cooled water, by contrast, is called wholesome and easy to digest. Anyone who has been told that re-boiled or long-standing water tastes “flat” has met the same idea.

What should a modern reader take from all this? Not a medical prescription — warm water is not a treatment for anything, and this chapter is heritage, not a doctor. But the gentle, general wisdom is easy to honour and hard to fault: many people simply find a cup of warm water, especially first thing in the morning or after a heavy meal, more comfortable and settling than cold, and the classical preference for warm over iced water through most of the year is a pleasant, low-stakes habit that has quietly become part of modern wellness routines the world over. The Ayurvedic case for ushna jala is less a cure than a small daily kindness to the body — and one this chapter makes beautifully. Sheetala Jala: When Cool Water Is Right — and When It Is Not

For all its love of warm water, the chapter is no zealot. It gives cool water (sheetala jala) its own clear place — the classical view is always one of matching the water to the body and the moment, not a single rule for everyone. Vagbhata describes cool water as the right choice for heat-led states, and the text traditionally associates it with relieving a cluster of classical conditions: madatyaya (the aftermath of intoxication), murccha (fainting), bhrama (giddiness), daha (burning sensations), trshna (excessive thirst), srama (fatigue), chardi (the urge to vomit) and the heat of raktapitta and visa (a poisoned state). Again, these are the text's classical attributions to cool water, set down as scholarship, not as anything our products do.

The pattern beneath the list is intuitive: where there is heat, dryness, burning or the fire of summer, cool water answers it; where there is cold, heaviness, sluggish digestion or an excess of kapha, warm water answers that. This is the same elegant logic of opposites (viparita) that runs through all of Ayurveda — like increases like, and opposites balance. It is also why the texts allow healthy people more cool water in the hot, dry months of grisma (summer) and sarad (autumn), and lean toward warm water the rest of the year. If you have ever instinctively reached for a cool drink on a scorching afternoon and a warm one on a cold, sluggish morning, you already practise sheetala-and-ushna wisdom without naming it.

One more practical gem belongs here: the humble earthen pot, the matka. Storing water in unglazed terracotta cools it gently by evaporation while softening its edge — the traditional middle path between harsh refrigerator-cold and tepid. It is the original, low-tech embodiment of sheetala jala done well, and it is no surprise it has never gone out of use across India. Jalapana Vidhi: How Much Water, and When to Drink It

Here the chapter turns from what water to drink to the question most modern readers actually wrestle with: how much, and when? The classical answer — the jalapana vidhi, the rules of drinking water — is subtle, and strikingly at odds with the modern habit of swigging a large glass before, during and after every meal without thought.

The Ashtanga Hridaya's most quoted teaching on this is about timing relative to the meal, and it is worth stating carefully. Water taken in the middle of a meal, in modest amount, is called the best: it is said to keep the tissues in balance and to support easy digestion. Water taken immediately after eating, in quantity, is said to be heavying and, over time, to encourage the body to put on weight. And water taken before a meal is said to weaken the digestive fire and, over time, to thin the body. In short: sip a little with your food; do not flood the stomach right after; and do not fill up on water just before you eat. The classical reasoning is all about protecting agni, the digestive fire — too much water at the wrong moment was thought to dampen it, like water on a flame. This same logic of how food and drink either kindle or load the body sits at the centre of the Ayurvedic view of weight, which we unpack in our guide to langhana and brimhana, the balance of reducing and nourishing.

On quantity, the texts are refreshingly un-dogmatic. One should drink to one's genuine need and not beyond it; the chapter cautions against drinking more than one's natural capacity, and it notes that certain people — those with weak digestion (agnimandya) or particular classical complaints — should take even less than usual. Healthy people, too, are told to keep water moderate except in the heat of summer and autumn, when more is natural. There is no classical commandment to force down a fixed number of glasses a day; the guide is the body's own thirst.

The single most useful idea in the whole jalapana section is also the simplest: let real thirst, not habit or a counting app, be your main guide to how much water you need — and favour small sips through the day over large gulps at the wrong moment. Classical Ayurveda treated thirst (trshna or pipasa) as a true natural urge, to be answered when it genuinely arises and not suppressed.

That last point connects this chapter to one of the most humane ideas in all of Ayurveda. Thirst is counted among the adharaniya vega — the natural urges one should never forcibly suppress. To ignore real thirst was thought to disturb the body just as surely as suppressing hunger or sleep; and forcing water you do not need is its own kind of imbalance. That whole philosophy of the urges — the ones we must answer and the ones we must not force — is the subject of Vagbhata's own previous chapter, which we read in our guide to Vega Dharana, and in Charaka's parallel account of the natural urges one should never suppress. The rules of when and how much to eat and drink, meanwhile, are the very stuff of Charaka's chapter on the right quantity of food.

Pana-anarha Jala: Water Unfit to Drink, and the Art of Purifying It

For all the lyricism about nectar-like rain, the most clear-eyed part of the chapter may be its honest catalogue of pana-anarha jala — water unfit for drinking. Vagbhata's description is unsparing and, to a modern eye, deeply familiar. Water should not be drunk, the text says, when it is dirty or muddy, choked with algae and grass, turbid, frothy, or fouled by the webs, urine and excreta of insects; when it has not been touched by sun, moon and wind; when it is so unseasonably cold that it sets the teeth on edge; or when it falls out of season or at the very start of the rains. The notes are explicit that the urine, droppings and decomposing bodies of creatures living in water, and the mats of plants that cover its surface and block sunlight and air, are what spoil it.

Pause on that. Without ever seeing a microbe, the classical writers had correctly identified biological and organic contamination — animal waste, decomposition, and stagnation cut off from light and air — as what makes water dangerous. They had noticed that water needs sun, air and movement to stay clean, and that still, covered, fouled water turns bad. This is, in all but the vocabulary, an early grasp of why stagnant water breeds disease.

What they did next is more impressive still: a genuine toolkit of water purification. The chapter and its tradition prescribe cleaning doubtful water by boiling it; by exposing it to sunlight; by dropping in red-hot iron, gold or silver, or hot sand or stones; by filtering it through cloth; and by adding clarifying and fragrant agents — such as the seeds and roots later associated with traditional clearing of water, the mineral gomedaka, and fragrant flowers to take away bad smell. Set that list beside a modern field guide to making water safe — boil it, use solar disinfection, filter it, let solids settle, store it covered — and the overlap is uncanny. Boiling, solar exposure and filtration remain three of the most important household water-treatment methods in the world today.

The clean-water wisdom, then and now

Then: avoid still, fouled, sunless, animal-spoiled water; trust water that has had sun, air and movement; and purify the doubtful by boiling, sunlight, hot metal, filtering through cloth and settling agents.

Now: we name the enemy as bacteria, protozoa and dissolved pollutants, but the defences are the same ones — boil, filter, disinfect (including with sunlight), let it settle, keep it covered. The classical writers reached, by observation alone, much of the core of modern household water safety.

The chapter even reads moving water shrewdly. Rivers that run swiftly toward the western ocean over clean ground are called wholesome; slow, sluggish, stagnating water is called unfit — the same distinction a modern hydrologist draws between healthy flowing water and stagnant pools. The text's further claims, that the water of particular named regions and mountains causes particular ailments, belong more to the geography of its day than to ours; but even there the underlying idea — that local water carries the character, good or ill, of the land it flows through — is simply true. The minerals and contaminants of a watershed really do shape the health of the people who drink from it.

Narikela Jala and Ksira: Coconut Water and the First Word on Milk

Before the chapter leaves water behind, it pauses on one more liquid that is having a great modern moment: narikela jala, coconut water. Vagbhata describes it as sweet in taste (madhura), unctuous and light (snigdha, laghu) and cooling in potency (sheeta virya); the classical view holds it pleasant and refreshing, settling to thirst and to the heat-led pitta. It is exactly the profile that has made tender coconut water a beloved natural summer drink across coastal India for as long as anyone can remember — the original ayurvedic summer drink, drunk straight from the shell. (As always, this is the classical description of a natural drink, not a health claim or a substitute for medical care.)

Then the chapter turns the page to its next great group, the Ksira Varga — the group of milks — and we meet the bridge from water to the richer liquids. Vagbhata counts eight kinds of milk (ksira), from cow's and buffalo's to goat's, camel's and more, and gives milk in general a clear classical character: sweet in taste and in its after-digestion (madhura vipaka), unctuous (snigdha), cool and heavy — nourishing to the tissues and to ojas, the subtle essence of vitality, while settling vata and pitta and building kapha. Cow's milk (go-ksira) is singled out as the most sustaining and balanced. A practical note closes the passage: raw, unboiled milk is held hard to digest, while properly boiled milk is light and wholesome — and milk fresh and warm from the source was likened, like clean rainwater, to nectar.

We will not follow milk all the way here — that is a chapter of its own, and the famous classical caution about combining milk with the wrong foods (the doctrine of viruddha ahara, incompatible combinations) deserves its own full telling. For now it is enough to see how the chapter works: one careful liquid at a time, each weighed for its taste, its potency, its after-effect and its action on the doshas, so that the reader can choose what to drink with the same care a physician would. That, in the end, is the gift of the Drava-dravya Vijnaniya — it teaches us to look at what is in the glass.

Reading the Drava-dravya Vijnaniya With Modern Eyes

Step back from the lists, and a clear, honest picture emerges of how to hold a chapter like this — with neither the worship that swallows it whole nor the scorn that throws it all away.

What is genuinely, sometimes startlingly, wise? A great deal. The understanding that not all water is equal, and its source decides its quality. The near-complete grasp of the water cycle, and that rain is naturally distilled. The correct identification of organic and stagnant contamination as what makes water dangerous — centuries before germ theory. A practical purification toolkit — boiling, sunlight, filtering, settling, covered storage — that maps almost one-to-one onto modern household water treatment. The shrewd reading of flowing versus stagnant water. The gentle, livable counsel to favour warm water, match it to season and digestion, and drink to real thirst rather than by force. And the sane idea that boiled water should be fresh, not stored for days. For a tradition working with nothing but patient observation, this is an extraordinary amount to have gotten right.

And what belongs firmly to its age? The astrology of the star Agastya clearing the waters; the specific claims that the water of this or that named region causes this or that disease; the reckoning of water by elemental dominance rather than chemistry; and the more magical of the purifying stones. These are not embarrassments to be hidden — only the parts of an old map that better knowledge has redrawn. And one caution must be added that the ancients could not have known: their world's rainwater and river water were cleaner than ours. Today's rain falls through polluted air and runs off contaminated surfaces; today's rivers may carry industrial and chemical loads no amount of classical wisdom anticipated. The reverence for clean water is timeless; the modern duty to treat and test it before trusting it is non-negotiable.

The honest way to read a classical chapter on water

Keep the timeless wisdom: judge water by its source; prefer clean, fresh water; mostly warm, matched to season and digestion; drink to real thirst, sip with meals; purify the doubtful by boiling and filtering; do not store boiled water for days.

Leave in the past what later knowledge has overturned: the astrology, the regional disease-geography, the magical stones, and any idea that untreated rain or river water is safe in today's polluted world.

Never read it as medicine. This chapter describes the qualities of water; it is heritage to understand, not a treatment for any condition, and never a substitute for a doctor or for properly treated drinking water.

Read that way, the Drava-dravya Vijnaniya is neither a relic nor a rulebook. It is a window onto how carefully one of the world's oldest medical traditions thought about the most ordinary substance there is — and a quiet reminder that paying attention to what we drink, and how, is wisdom that never goes out of date.

Gangambu is clean, uncontaminated rainwater — one form of antariksha jala or akasodaka, “water of the sky” (which also includes hail, dew and snow-water). The Ashtanga Hridaya prized clean rain as the lightest, purest and most balanced of all waters, almost like nectar, and all but described the water cycle in explaining how the sun lifts sea water into the sky to fall again as sweet rain. Important caveat: modern rainwater falls through polluted air and must still be filtered and treated before it is safe to drink.

How did classical Ayurveda purify water? +

The texts prescribe a genuinely practical toolkit: boiling the water; exposing it to sunlight; dropping in red-hot iron, gold or silver, or hot sand and stones; filtering it through cloth; letting it settle; and adding clarifying and fragrant agents.
