Shastra vidhi is the twenty-sixth chapter of the Ashtanga Hridaya's Sutrasthana. In it Vagbhata sets out the twenty-six sharp instruments (shastra) of classical Ayurveda: what they are called, what they are made of, the thirteen actions they perform, the eight faults that disqualify one, how each is held, and the cloth case they are kept in. The chapter's first word is its count, shadvimshatih, twenty-six. One of its first requirements is that the blades be akarala: not dreadful to look at.

This article reads the first half of the chapter in Vidyanath's edition, checks each count against its own list, and sets Vagbhata beside Charaka, Sushruta and his own Ashtanga Sangraha. It describes a classical text. It is not instruction, and nothing in it is advice.

Shastra Vidhi: What Ashtanga Hridaya Sutrasthana 26 Covers

The Ashtanga Hridaya gives the equipment of shalya, the branch of the eight-limbed tradition concerned with operative work, two chapters in a row. Sutrasthana 25, Yantra-vidhi, covered the blunt instruments, and our reading of it, Yantra Vidhi: Ashtanga Hridaya Sutrasthana 25, followed Vagbhata through a hundred and one of them. Sutrasthana 26, the Shastra-vidhi Adhyaya, turns to the sharp ones.

It opens the way every chapter of the Hridaya opens: athatah shastravidhim adhyayam vyakhyasyamah, "now we shall set out the chapter on the method of sharp instruments", iti ha smahur atreyadayo maharshayah, "so said Atreya and the other great sages". Then, without a sentence of preamble, it gives a number.

In Vidyanath's Chowkhamba edition, which is the text we read for this article, the chapter runs from printed page 362 to printed page 377, and it falls into two unequal halves. The first half, the part this article covers, is about the instruments as objects: four verses of specification, four bracketed verses of names, a verse or two describing each instrument, a verse on accessory instruments (anu-shastra), a verse of thirteen actions, a verse of eight faults, three verses on how to hold them and two on the case they are kept in. The second half turns to raktamokshana, the letting of blood, with the leech (jalauka), the horn (shringa), the gourd (alabu) and the pot (ghati). That half is clinical from its first line, two of our existing articles already approach its subject from Charaka's and Sushruta's side, and it is left for a separate reading.

What the first half describes is not an operation but an object, described the way a careful maker would: size, proportion, material, finish, faults, grip and storage. That is the angle this article keeps to: name, form, material and count, with what each instrument was used on left out, deliberately and completely, for reasons set out further down.

Shastra Lakshana: A Specification in Four Verses

The first four verses, under the heading shastra-lakshana, are a specification, and they read like one. Here they are as printed, transliterated without diacritics, each followed by a plain rendering.

shadvimshatih sukarmarair ghatitani yathavidhi / shastrani romavahini bahulyena angulani shat

"Twenty-six sharp instruments, forged by good smiths according to rule, fine enough to split a hair, for the most part six angula long."

Read as a maker's brief, the four verses cover nearly everything a maker needs to know. Who makes it: sukarmara, a good worker of metal (the translation says "skilled blacksmiths"), working yathavidhi, according to the established method. What from: ayas, iron, sudhmata, well fired in the blast of the furnace, then sutikshna and avartita, keenly sharpened and worked over; the translation adds that the edges are made sharp by hammering. How big: six angula, finger-breadths (the translation gives nine centimetres), and only bahulyena, "for the most part", since several later descriptions give other lengths. In what proportion: the blade (phala) a half or a quarter of the instrument's own length (svonmana). In what finish: sudhara, well-edged, and samahita-mukhagra, with mouth and tip set true. To what handle: sugraha, easy to grip. In what number: prayo dvitrani, generally two or three of each kind.

That last figure deserves one line of arithmetic, because the chapter does not do it. At two of each kind a full set comes to 26 × 2 = 52 pieces, and at three of each to 26 × 3 = 78. The totals are ours, not the text's. They make the point the verse is making: twenty-six is a count of kinds, and the kit in the case was always larger than the list.

Sudhmata ayas: the verse asks for iron that has been well fired and well worked, by a good smith.

The word the translation softens. Vidyanath folds surupa and akarala together as "comprising lovely shape". The Sanskrit is sharper. Karala describes what gapes and frightens, and akarala is its negation. The other qualities in these verses concern the metal, the edge or the hand that holds it. Akarala concerns the person who has to look at it.

Nilambhoja-Chhavi and Romavahini: The Edge the Text Asks For

Two phrases in the specification describe the edge itself, and both describe it through ordinary things.

The first is romavahini. Roma is a hair of the body, and the translation renders the phrase as instruments "able to do the longitudinal section of the hair follicle", which comes to the same thing as splitting a hair along its length. It is a test anyone can read without apparatus.

The second is nilambhoja-chhavi: having the chhavi, the lustre or colouring, of the nilambhoja, the blue water-born flower more often called nilotpala, the blue water lily. The translation reads it as "the color of the edges appears as the petals of blue lotus". That is all the verse says. It does not say why an edge should look blue, or how it comes to.

There is an obvious reading, and we give it with a flag on it. A bright iron or steel surface, heated gently, takes on a sequence of thin oxide colours, straw, then bronze, then purple, then blue, and metalworkers in many traditions have long read those colours as they worked. A blade that shows a blue sheen along its edge may be one that has passed through that stage. If that is what the verse means, nilambhoja-chhavi is a finishing instruction written as a flower. But the chapter does not say so, the translator does not say so, and we did not find a commentary that does in the pages we read. We report the simile; the metallurgy is our reading.

The same flower appears twice in this chapter, once as a colour and once as a shape. One of the twenty-six is the utpalapatra, the "blue-lily leaf", a long-edged blade named for the outline of the petal. A single plant supplies both the look of every edge and the silhouette of one of them, which is why the blue water lily is the photograph at the head of this page.

Reading note

Chhavi means lustre, complexion or colouring. It is not a word for shape. The requirement about shape is separate, and it is the next phrase in the same verse: namanugata-rupani, forms that follow their names.

The Twenty-Six Names, Verse by Verse

The names come in four short verses, compressed the way Sanskrit lists often are: several names are packed into a single word in the dual, so that one compound carries two instruments. Here is the list as printed, in four lines:

Unpacked, and with each name glossed only for what it says about the instrument's form, the list reads as follows. The right-hand column comes from the chapter's own individual descriptions as the translation gives them. The uses those descriptions also give are left out.

Two things are worth noticing before going further. The first is that the list counts kinds, not objects: the ara is chaturvidhakara, "of four forms", and the needles, suchyah, are named in the plural and described in three kinds. The second is how the names are built. Some name a shape, some name a thing the shape resembles, and a few name the instrument's work: eshani, the seeker; dantalekhanaka, the tooth-scraper; karnavedhani, the ear-piercer. The next two sections take up each point in turn.

Antarvaktra-Ardhachandraka: The Reading That Makes the List Close

In Vidyanath's edition the four verses of names are printed inside brackets, with their own verse numbers. The translator's note explains why: "In some of the mss. the remaining 3½ verses of the sanskrit text mentioned after the first 4 verses were missed. The names of the sharp instruments were given in those slokas." Some manuscripts of the Ashtanga Hridaya, in other words, carry the specification and the number but not the list of names.

That makes the relation between the two passages unusually interesting. The number sits in the stable part of the text: shadvimshatih is the first word of the first verse, present whether or not a copyist included the names. The names sit in the fragile part. So the number can be used to check the names.

Counted verse by verse, reading each dual compound as the two names it packs, the first verse names nine instruments, the second seven, the third eight and the fourth two.

The count

9 + 7 + 8 + 2 = 26

First verse: mandalagra, vriddhipatra, utpala and adhyardhadhara, sarpa and eshani, vetasa, sharari and trikurchaka. Second: kusha, ata, antarvaktra-ardhachandraka, vrihimukha, kuthari, shalaka and anguli-shastra. Third: badisha, karapatra, kartari, nakha-shastra, dantalekhanaka, suchi, kurcha, khaja. Fourth: ara, karnavedhani.

The sum closes at the number the chapter announced, but only on one reading of one word. The printed text gives antarvaktrardhachandrake, and -ke is the same dual ending that packs two names into utpala-adhyardhadharake and shalaka-anguli-shastrake. Read as a pair, an "inward-mouthed" instrument and a separate "half-moon", the second verse would name eight, and the list would come to twenty-seven. Beside the word, in brackets, the editor prints a variant ending, -kam, which is singular. The translator numbers the name as a single instrument. And when the chapter later describes it, it describes one instrument with a half-moon-shaped edge. On that reading, and only on that reading, the names come to exactly twenty-six.

So a count given in the part of the text every copy preserves confirms a reading in the part some copies lost. The chapter has, in effect, a checksum, and it holds. It is the kind of thing that only shows up if someone actually counts.

Namanugata Rupa: When the Name Is the Drawing

The third verse of the specification asks that the instruments be namanugata-rupa: that their forms follow their names. Our reading of the previous chapter noticed that Vagbhata names many of the blunt instruments after the faces of the animals they resemble, the heron, the crow, the lion. Chapter 26 turns that habit into a requirement. The name is not a label added after the object is made; it is the brief the smith works to. If you know the name, you know the outline.

Grouped by where they come from, the twenty-six names show the range of things a reader was expected to be able to picture.

  • Plants. Five names carry a plant: vriddhipatra (the leaf of the vriddhi), utpalapatra (the blue water lily), vetasapatra (the cane), kushapatra (kusha grass, the grass of ritual seats) and vrihimukha (a grain of rice). The descriptions add two more: the tips of the shalaka are like a kurabaka bud, and the tip of the karnavedhani like a jasmine bud.
  • Creatures. Three names carry one: the snake of the sarpamukha, and the two water birds of the shararimukha and the atamukha. The descriptions add the earthworm's mouth of the eshani and, in the translation, the cow's tooth of the kutharika.
  • Household and trade objects. The saw (karapatra), the scissors (kartari), the fish-hook (badisha), the little axe (kutharika), the rod (shalaka), the needle (suchi), the brush (kurcha), the churning stick (khaja) and the awl (ara), which the translation specifies as the shoemaker's.
  • Geometry. The round tip (mandalagra), the half-moon (ardhachandraka), the one-and-a-half edge (adhyardhadhara) and the three points (trikurchaka).

There is something practical in this. A text copied by hand for centuries cannot carry drawings reliably, but a copyist who cannot draw will still copy a word correctly. A name that is also a description travels with the text, and the one instruction in these verses about form, namanugata-rupa, makes sure that it does. The flower, the grass, the grain and the bud are, in effect, the diagrams.

It is also why the photographs on this page show plants, iron, cloth and stone and never an instrument: a chapter that names its blades after leaves and buds makes that easy.

Two Texts by Vagbhata: One Count, Two Orders

Vidyanath's note sets beside the Hridaya's list the order given in the Ashtanga Sangraha, the longer work the note attributes to Vriddha Vagbhata, "the elder Vagbhata". The Sangraha also has twenty-six. It begins differently, with the dantalekhana and the mandalagra, and it ends differently, with the badisha and the nakha-shastra, where the Hridaya ends with the awl and the ear-piercer.

Laid side by side, the two lists hold the same inventory. In two places they use a genuinely different word for what the descriptions make clear is the same thing:

  • Where the Hridaya has the anguli-shastra, the "finger instrument", the Sangraha has the mudrika, the "ring". Both are a small blade set in a ring worn on the finger.
  • Where the Hridaya has the kurcha, the Sangraha has the suchikurcha, the "needle-brush", which is simply the fuller name of the same cluster of needles.

Elsewhere the names differ only as synonyms do. Mukha, vaktra and vadana all mean mouth or face, so the snake-mouthed blade can be sarpamukha in one list and sarpavaktra in the other, and karnavedhani and karnavyadhana are two forms of the same verb for piercing.

What really differs is the order. An inventory that holds at twenty-six while its sequence changes is being counted by kind, not recited as a fixed chain.

The editor adds that Sushruta counts twenty sharp instruments where Vagbhata counts twenty-six. We have not read that passage ourselves (our Sushruta volumes do not include its Sutrasthana), so the figure is the editor's. Shastra Karma: Six, Eight, Twelve and Thirteen Actions

Verse 28 lists what sharp instruments do. It is another packed verse:

utpatya-patya-sivya-eshya-lekhya-pracchana-kuttanam / chhedyam bhedyam vyadho mantho graho dahash cha tat-kriyah

"Lifting out, splitting, stitching, probing, scraping, scarifying and pricking; excising, opening, piercing, drilling, holding and burning: these are their actions."

The first line packs seven actions into one compound and the second names six separately: 7 + 6 = 13. In the translation's order they are utpatana (extracting), patana (tearing), sivana (suturing), eshana (probing), lekhana (scraping), pracchana, kuttana (pricking), chedana (excision), bhedana (incision), vyadhana (puncturing), manthana (drilling), grahana (catching) and dahana (cauterisation). Vidyanath glosses pracchana as draining; Van Loon, translating Charaka, gives scarification.

The number is not fixed across the classical texts, and the editor's notes make it possible to line the versions up.

Three things stand out. Charaka's six, as Van Loon translates them, each have a counterpart among Vagbhata's thirteen: incision, puncturing, excision, scraping, scarification and suturing are patana, vyadhana, chedana, lekhana, pracchana and sivana. (Vidyanath's note, listing Charaka's six in Sanskrit, prints lepana where Van Loon's scraping requires lekhana; the second is presumably the intended word.) The one action the Sangraha leaves out, according to the editor, is dahana, burning, the only action on the list not done with an edge at all, and the subject of the Hridaya's own thirtieth chapter, Kshara-Agnikarma-vidhi. And the editor's printed table of the Sangraha's twelve has a small slip of its own: it runs from one to twelve but skips the number eight, so that only eleven actions appear. Set beside the Hridaya's thirteen, the one missing apart from dahana is kuttana, pricking, which is presumably the dropped eighth. That is our inference from the two lists, not something the note says.

Shastra Dosha: Eight Ways a Sharp Instrument Fails

Verse 29 is the inspection list:

kuntha-khanda-tanu-sthula-hrasva-dirghatva-vakratah / shastranam khara-dharatvam ashtau doshah prakirtitah

"Bluntness, a break, thinness, thickness, shortness, length, bending, and a rough edge: these are declared the eight faults of sharp instruments."

Seven faults are packed into the first compound, and one more, khara-dharatva, stands in the second line: 7 + 1 = 8. The verse states the total itself, in a number-word, ashtau, eight.

  1. Kuntha: blunt
  2. Khanda: broken or chipped
  3. Tanu: too thin
  4. Sthula: too thick
  5. Hrasva: too short
  6. Dirgha: too long
  7. Vakra: bent
  8. Khara-dhara: rough-edged

The shape of the list tells you what it is for. Four of the eight come as two pairs of opposites, too thin and too thick, too short and too long, which means a good instrument is defined as the point between two failures and not as the maximum of anything. Two faults concern the edge (blunt, rough), one the integrity of the piece (broken) and one its line (bent). Each can be checked by eye or hand in seconds, before use. It is a checklist, and it answers the specification point for point: sudhara, "well-edged", is the positive of kuntha and khara-dhara, and "half or a quarter of its own length" is the positive of hrasva and dirgha.

Why a list of faults is more useful than a list of virtues. "Well made" is a judgement; "bent" is an observation. By naming eight observable ways an instrument can be wrong, the verse turns a standard into something two different people would apply in the same way.

Shastra Grahana: Three Grips and a Blade Hidden in the Palm

Verses 30 to 32 say how the instruments are held. They are short and exact:

chheda-bhedana-lekhyartham shastram vrinta-phalantare / tarjani-madhyama-angushthair grihniyat susamahitah

tala-pracchanna-vrintagram grahyam vrihimukham mukhe

For cutting, opening and scraping, the instrument is held between the handle (vrinta) and the blade (phala), with the index finger, the middle finger and the thumb, and with full attention: susamahitah, "well collected". Instruments for draining are held at the tip of the handle, between the index finger and the thumb. Instruments for extraction are held at the root. The rest are held as the work makes easiest, kriya-saukaryatah.

One instrument has a grip of its own. The vrihimukha, the rice-grain-tipped instrument, is taken with its handle tala-pracchanna, covered by the palm, and held at its mouth. The text gives no reason. We note only that this is the one grip in the chapter that keeps the length of an instrument out of sight, in a chapter that began by asking that its instruments be akarala, not dreadful to look at. The connection is ours, and it may be a matter of practical convenience rather than of design.

We have not illustrated this section. Our photographs never show hands, and a grip is nothing but a hand.

Shastra Kosha: Twelve Angula of Wool-Lined Cloth

The last two verses of this half of the chapter describe where the instruments live. They are worth reading in full, because they are the most domestic lines in a technical chapter.

"Let the case for the instruments be nine angula wide and twelve long, closely made, of linen, leaf, wool, silk, fine cloth or soft leather; with its ties set in place, well stitched, the instruments lying within it in wool; its mouth closed with a rod; and easy to carry."

The translation gives the case as twelve inches by nine, but the Sanskrit counts in angula, finger-breadths, the same unit as the instruments. That matters, because it makes the case fit its contents. The standard instrument is six angula long and the case is twelve, so 12 = 2 × 6: exactly twice the length of what goes inside. The materials are all soft or pliant, from plant fibre to leather; the lining is wool, urna; and the closure is a rod laid across the mouth, shalaka-pihitasya. The last word, susanchaya, has the sense of something that gathers and keeps its contents well, and the translation renders it as "easy to carry".

Read against the specification, the case is the practical answer to one phrase in the third verse: sada sannihitani, "always kept at hand". Two or three of each of twenty-six kinds need a place each, which is what the translation's "compartments" provide, and an edge that must split a hair needs to rest in something that will not blunt it: wool.

Anu-Shastra: What Serves as an Instrument Without Being One

Between the individual descriptions and the list of actions, verse 27 opens the category of anu-shastra, the accessory or subsidiary instruments. The translation lists them as leeches, alkalis, fire, sunstone, glass, rock crystal, magnet, nails, the leaves of teak and of nirgundi, and other things with a rough surface, such as dried cow dung. "Even though they are not the actual instruments," it says, "they serve the purpose as that of the instruments." The verse then hands the matter to the physician, who, in the translation's words, "can fabricate the blunt and sharp instruments by applying his mind".

The list is odd on purpose. It holds a living creature, a caustic preparation (kshara, the alkali), an element (fire), a stone that gathers sunlight (suryakanta, the "sun-stone"), glass and clear rock crystal, a magnet, a part of the body, two kinds of leaf, and a rough dry surface. What these share is not a material or a form but a function: each can do some part of what an edge does. The category is defined by work, which is exactly the principle the chapter applies to its own twenty-six when it says they are to be used "according to the particular site".

The same move closes the blunt-instrument chapter before this one, where the anu-yantra include the hand, time, and even things that excite happiness or fear. In both chapters Vagbhata finishes his inventory by leaving it open. The list is not the limit; the physician's understanding is. Payana and Practice: What the Ashtanga Sangraha Adds

Two further passages on these pages are not the Hridaya's verses but the editor's summary of the Ashtanga Sangraha, and we keep them separate for that reason.

The first is shastra payana, the tempering of a blade in a liquid. The note names three, an alkali (kshara), water and oil, and it matches each to the kind of tissue the instrument will meet: the alkali-tempered blade to bone, the water-tempered blade to flesh, the oil-tempered blade to vessels and sinews. It does not explain the choice. Metalworkers will recognise the principle, if not the particulars: the liquid a hot blade is quenched in changes how fast it cools, and so how hard and how brittle the finished edge becomes. The note's pairing of three liquids with three kinds of work is at least consistent with that. As with the blue lotus, the metallurgy is our gloss and not the text's claim.

The second passage is about learning. The note says that the vaidya should master the science, gain practical experience by attending a large number of operations, and practise on models (the translation says "puppets"), and that dissection of the body after death is essential for learning its structure. A specification is only half of a craft; the other half is a trained hand, and the text does not pretend a list can supply it.

What This Article Withholds, and Why

This is a page about a surgical chapter on a website that also sells everyday products, so it is worth being plain about what it leaves out.

  • Every indication. Nearly every individual description in the chapter pairs an instrument with the parts of the body and the clinical conditions it was used on. We have left out every one of those pairings. The instruments are described here by name, form and material only.
  • Detailed dimensions. Beyond the six-angula standard and the case, the individual blade sizes are not reproduced.
  • The second half of the chapter. From printed page 370 onward the chapter turns to raktamokshana: the ways of letting blood, the leech and its kinds, the horn, the gourd and the pot. That material is left for a later reading. This is not instruction. Nothing described in this chapter is something anyone should attempt, and nothing on this page is a guide to doing so. It is a reading of a classical text, offered as history and scholarship. Anything touching on procedures of any kind belongs with a qualified practitioner.

What This Chapter Does Not Say

A close reading should be as clear about absences as about contents. In the pages covered here, we did not find:

  • A reason for twenty-six. The chapter states the number in its first word, and its list confirms it, but it never argues for it.
  • A reason for the blue. Nilambhoja-chhavi is stated as a requirement, with no account of how an edge comes to have that lustre or why it should.
  • The word steel. The metal named is ayas, iron. Tempering in liquids appears only in the editor's summary of the Sangraha, not in the Hridaya's verses.
  • The smith's method. The verses say yathavidhi, "according to rule", and name the firing, sharpening and working; they do not describe the smithing itself.
  • Sushruta in the original. The figures of twenty instruments and eight actions come from the editor's notes. We did not read the Sushruta Samhita passages for this article.
  • The accessory verse in Sanskrit. Verse 27 was read in translation only.

A technical text that says what it says and then stops is easier to trust than one that explains everything.

How We Read and Cite This Chapter

The text is Vidyanath's English translation of the Ashtanga Hridaya, Sutrasthana, published by Chowkhamba: chapter 26, printed pages 362 to 370 for the material covered here. The Devanagari of the specification (verses 1 to 4), the bracketed verses of names, the verses on actions and faults (28 and 29), on grip (30 to 32) and on the case (33 and 34) was read off page images of that edition today. The transliterations are ours, simplified and without diacritics. Verse numbers are the edition's; the bracketed name verses carry their own numbering, one to four.

Where the editor's notes supply something the verses do not, such as the Ashtanga Sangraha's order and its twelve actions (Sutrasthana 34), Sushruta's twenty instruments and eight actions, the tempering and the training, we attribute it to the note. Charaka's six actions were checked in a second translation, Gabriel Van Loon's, at Chikitsa Sthana 25.55. Every count on this page is either a number-word the verse itself uses (shadvimshatih, ashtau) or a count we made of the named items, and where we have inferred something, such as the metallurgy of the blue or the missing eighth row, we say so where it appears.

Where Shastra Vidhi Sits in the Ashtanga Hridaya

The Sutrasthana, the Ashtanga Hridaya's section of principles, has thirty chapters, and its last nine form a run on procedures and their equipment. In Vidyanath's edition they are:

  • 22: Gandushadi-vidhi, on liquids held in the mouth (our reading of chapter 22)
  • 23: Ascotananjana-vidhi, on eye drops and collyrium (our reading of chapter 23)
  • 24: Tarpana-Putapaka-vidhi
  • 25: Yantra-vidhi, the blunt instruments (linked above)
  • 26: Shastra-vidhi, the sharp instruments (this article)
  • 27: Siravyadha-vidhi
  • 28: Shalyaharana-vidhi
  • 29: Shastrakarma-vidhi

What is shastra vidhi in the Ashtanga Hridaya? +

Shastra vidhi, "the method of sharp instruments", is chapter 26 of the Sutrasthana of Vagbhata's Ashtanga Hridaya. Its first half sets out twenty-six sharp instruments (shastra): how they are made, their names, thirteen actions, eight faults, the grip and the case. It follows chapter 25, Yantra-vidhi, on the blunt instruments.

How many sharp instruments does Ashtanga Hridaya Sutrasthana 26 name? +

Twenty-six. The number is the first word of the chapter's first verse, shadvimshatih, and the four verses of names add up to it, nine, seven, eight and two, provided antarvaktra-ardhachandraka is read as one instrument, as the editor's bracketed variant and the translator's numbering both read it.

Why are the names printed in brackets in Vidyanath's edition? +

The editor notes that some manuscripts lack the three and a half verses that carry the names, although they include the specification and the number. The edition prints those verses in brackets with their own numbering, one to four.

Why does the text say the edge should look like a blue lotus? +

The verse asks for nilambhoja-chhavi, the lustre of the blue water lily, and gives no reason. One possible reading is that it describes the blue sheen iron or steel can take on when it is heated during finishing, but that reading is ours and not the text's.

What are the thirteen shastra karma according to Vagbhata? +

Utpatana (lifting out), patana (splitting), sivana (stitching), eshana (probing), lekhana (scraping), pracchana, kuttana (pricking), chedana (excising), bhedana (opening), vyadhana (piercing), manthana (drilling), grahana (holding) and dahana (burning). Charaka gives six at Chikitsa Sthana 25.55, and the editor reports eight for Sushruta and twelve for the Ashtanga Sangraha.

What are the eight shastra dosha? +

Kuntha (blunt), khanda (broken), tanu (too thin), sthula (too thick), hrasva (too short), dirgha (too long), vakra (bent) and khara-dhara (rough-edged). The verse gives the total as a number-word, ashtau.

What was a shastra kosha? +

The case for the instruments: nine angula wide and twelve long, made of linen, leaf, wool, silk, fine cloth or soft leather, well stitched, with the instruments lying in wool and the mouth closed with a rod. At twelve angula it is twice the length of a standard six-angula instrument.

What are anu-shastra? +

Things that are not instruments but can do part of an instrument's work. The translation of verse 27 lists leeches, alkalis, fire, sunstone, glass, rock crystal, magnet, nails, teak and nirgundi leaves, and rough surfaces such as dried cow dung, and adds that the physician may devise further instruments by applying his mind.

Does the Ashtanga Sangraha list the same sharp instruments? +

Yes, twenty-six, in a different order, with mudrika where the Hridaya has anguli-shastra and suchikurcha where it has kurcha. The other differences are synonyms.
