Ask a reader of the classics where the Charaka Samhita keeps its medicines, and they will point to the great treatment books — the Chikitsa Sthana with its rasayana chapters, the hundreds of named preparations. But the recipes are only the visible half of a pharmacy. The invisible half — where the plants grow, when they are gathered, how they are stored, in what medium they are given, how a formula is built, adjusted, corrected — lives in the Kalpa Sthana, the section whose very name means preparation. This is the home ground of what the later tradition calls Bhaishajya Kalpana — the pharmaceutics of Ayurveda, still taught under that name to every BAMS student — and the pages we read today are among its founding documents: the opening rules of Kalpa Sthana chapter 1, and the closing doctrine of chapter 12, where the whole discipline is gathered into general laws.

What makes these pages so absorbing is not any single recipe — they contain almost none — but the system. Here is a text, fixed in writing many centuries ago, insisting that the quality of a medicine is decided long before the cooking pot: in the soil, in the season, in the conduct of the person who picks the plant, in the storeroom’s ventilation, in the choice of the liquid that carries the preparation to its user. A modern reader will recognise the shape immediately. It is a complete quality chain — sourcing, harvesting, storage, formulation, delivery, adjustment — written in verse, with a swing of rope for a storage rack and a white-clad gatherer for a quality officer.

The Pharmacy Wing of the Charaka Samhita

The Charaka Samhita is built in eight sections, and each has its temperament. The Sutrasthana teaches first principles — we have walked its dravyaguna doctrine, where every substance is read through taste, quality, potency and after-effect. The Nidana Sthana studies how disorders arise. The Chikitsa Sthana treats. The Kalpa Sthana — twelve chapters, usually placed seventh — is the pharmacy: it takes the two great evacuative procedures of the classical clinic, vamana and virechana, and works out their materials with the patience of a craftsman’s manual. Which plants supply them. How each plant is prepared. And then, in the twelfth chapter, the laws that govern all of it.

Two things are worth saying before we enter. First, the Kalpa Sthana’s procedures belong to the classical physician’s dispensary, not to the home — the text itself will spend its final verses saying exactly that, at length, with an almost modern anxiety about wrong use. We read them here as scholarship: as a window into how completely the old tradition thought about making anything at all. Second, the vocabulary of these pages — bheshaja (medicine), aushadha (herb, remedy), kalpana (preparation, devising) — is the vocabulary from which the whole later discipline took its name. When a pharmacy college today teaches Bhaishajya Kalpana, it is teaching, refined and expanded by twenty intervening centuries, the material of these very chapters.

Where a Medicine Begins: The Soil Rules of the Kalpa Sthana

The first chapter’s opening rules (Kalpa Sthana 1, verse 9, as numbered in this edition) answer a question most of us have never thought to ask: where should a medicinal plant grow? The text’s answer is a small landscape painting. Medicinal plants should be raised in temperate or arid country, nourished in due time by cold, sun, air and water; the ground should be even, clean, and provided with water. The soil itself is described with a farmer’s tenderness — unctuous, black, sweet or golden-sweet, soft, and unploughed — and the young plants are to be screened with kusha and rohisha grasses, living windbreaks against sun, wind and browsing creatures. One more rule, easy to miss and quietly wise: the plant must not be overgrown by stronger plants. A herb that spent its life struggling for light is not the herb the pharmacy wants.

Just as striking is the list of forbidden ground. No growing near a cremation ground, a sacred site or temple, a meeting place, a ditch, an orchard, an ant-hill, or barren land. Part of this is ritual sensibility, part of it plain agronomy — the ditch is waterlogged, the barren land starved, the orchard full of competing roots, the meeting place trampled — and part of it is something subtler: the conviction that a medicine’s biography matters. The tradition wanted to know where its materials had been, the way a careful kitchen wants to know its farm.

The Collector’s Calendar: Which Part of the Plant, in Which Season

Verse 10 turns from the garden to the harvest, and here the text produces one of its most practical instruments: a calendar of plant parts. A plant is not one material but several — leaf, root, bark, latex, heartwood, flower, fruit — and each reaches its best state at a different point of the year. The rule of thumb underneath is easy to feel: gather each part when the plant’s vitality is concentrated in it.

Before the calendar, the same verse describes what a collectible plant looks like: grown in its proper season; mature in taste, potency and smell; its smell, colour, taste, touch and efficacy unspoiled by time, sun, fire, water, wind or organisms; fresh; and — a lovely, much-discussed touch — situated in the northern direction. Commentators have read that last phrase variously; what is not in doubt is the demand that precedes it. The plant must be undamaged by everything that damages plants — a checklist a modern herb buyer still runs, item for item, under the name of quality inspection.

The Person in White: The Herb Collector’s Protocol

Between the plant and the pharmacy stands a person, and the text pauses to describe them. The gatherer of herbs should be of auspicious behaviour and benevolent conduct, clean, and dressed in white; the gathering itself is done after worship and a fast, facing east or north (Ka 1.10). It is easy to read this as ceremony, and it is ceremony — but notice what the ceremony does. It slows the work down. It selects, for the most consequential step in the whole chain, a person in a deliberate, unhurried, attentive state of mind. Anyone who has watched modern quality work knows the insight: the material is only as good as the state of the person handling it. The white dress is the old tradition’s clean-room coat.

A detail worth savouring: the collector faces east or north — the directions of sunrise and of the pole star, of beginnings and of steadiness. The old pharmacy encoded its values in geography: even the gatherer’s posture pointed somewhere meaningful.

A Swing of Rope: How the Classical Pharmacy Was Stored

What the gatherer brings home, verse 11 stores with remarkable specificity. The herbs go into suitable, sound containers, in rooms that face east and north; the rooms should be sheltered from wind and yet well ventilated. The stores are honoured daily with offerings of flowers. And then the instruction that gives the storeroom its unforgettable picture: the stocks should be held up in a swing of rope, well covered, and made unapproachable by fire, water, humidity, smoke, dust, rats and quadrupeds (Ka 1.11).

A sling of rope, hung from the beams. Every villager in the subcontinent has seen one — the chhika, the hanging net that keeps the milk pot away from the cat. Applied to a pharmacy it is close to perfect: air circulates on every side of the stored material; nothing wicks damp from a floor or a wall; no rat walks a rope upside down. Add the east-facing room (morning sun, the day’s driest light), the ban on smoke and dust, the daily visit that the flower-offering guarantees — a storekeeper who must come every morning is a storekeeper who notices things — and verse 11 amounts to a complete storage protocol: ventilation, moisture control, pest control, contamination control, and daily inspection, in one sentence of Sanskrit.

Anupana: The Vehicle Decides the Journey

The chapter’s next concern (Ka 1.12) is a doctrine the tradition never stopped refining: anupana, the vehicle — the liquid with which, or in which, a preparation is administered. The insight is that the carrier is not neutral. The same substance arrives differently in wine than in milk, in honey than in a decoction; the vehicle is chosen to suit the person’s constitution, and the text sets out the classical table:

Read the three rows together and the logic surfaces at once: the airy, cold constitution is given the warm, sour, grounding carriers; the fiery one is given the sweet and cool; the heavy, cool one is given the light and penetrating. It is the same three-way grammar that organises the whole of classical practice — the tridosha doctrine applied to the drinking cup. And it pairs beautifully with a chapter we have read before: the Chikitsa Sthana’s ledger of the ten times to take a medicine. Between them the two doctrines complete the prescription’s second half: not only what, but in what and when.

The 600 Formulas: Charaka’s Counted Library

Leap now to the far end of the section — chapter 12, the Kalpa Sthana’s summing-up, where the text does something scholars love it for: it counts its own library. Across the preceding chapters, working plant by plant through its evacuative materials — madanaphala first among them — the tradition has been listing preparations. Now it totals them (Ka 12.41–42): 355 formulas of the first class, 245 of the second — 600 in all, built “mainly with regard to 15 drugs.”

Six hundred preparations from fifteen plants. Sit with that ratio for a moment, because it is the whole spirit of Bhaishajya Kalpana in one arithmetic. The pharmacy’s wealth is not in the number of its raw materials; it is in the number of its preparations — the forms, combinations, vehicles and processings through which fifteen well-understood substances become six hundred distinct instruments. We saw the same spirit in the five kashaya kalpanas — juice, paste, decoction, cold and hot infusion: five basic forms that multiply any herb into five tools. Chapter 12 is that idea grown to full size.

The King and His People: How a Formula Is Named

How do you name a preparation that contains many things? The text’s answer (Ka 12.43–44) comes with the most charming simile in the chapter. A formula is named after its principal drug; the other ingredients are subsidiary. In such formulations, says the text, madanaphala and its peers are the principals and the accompanying substances follow them “as the people follow the king.”

Then, immediately, two rules that show how much practical wisdom hides in the naming doctrine. First (Ka 12.45): a subsidiary of contrary potency does not obstruct the principal’s work — while a subsidiary of similar potency enhances it. The king is not weakened by ministers who differ from him; he is strengthened by ministers who agree. Second (Ka 12.46), the frank concession every real pharmacy makes: in every disorder, substances of contrary potency will almost certainly be used for the sake of agreeable colour, taste, touch and smell. The old compounders knew what every parent coaxing a child knows — a preparation no one will take has no potency at all. Palatability is not a compromise of the art; it is part of the art.

The naming rule, in brief (Ka 12.43–46)

• The formula bears the name of its principal drug — the people follow the king.

• Contrary subsidiaries do not obstruct; similar subsidiaries enhance.

• Contrary-potency ingredients are legitimately added for colour, taste, touch and smell — the classical defence of palatability.

Bhavana: The Art of Impregnation

Verse 47 delivers the chapter’s most celebrated pharmaceutical idea. The principal drugs, it says, should be further potentiated by impregnating them with their own juice — the process the tradition calls bhavana: the powdered substance is wetted with its own expressed liquid (or the juice of a substance of similar potency), worked, and dried, and the cycle may be repeated. The reason given is a small marvel of compressed observation: “even a small drug, if impregnated well, exerts multiple actions.”

Think about what the instruction achieves. Each round of soaking and drying loads the same small mass of powder with another measure of the plant’s soluble substance. Concentration rises; bulk does not. The dose stays small — kinder to the taker — while the preparation grows denser in exactly the fraction of the plant that dissolves and works. The later tradition made bhavana one of its everyday instruments, and its logic — concentrate the active portion, spare the bulk — is one any modern formulator would recognise as their own first principle, reached here with a mortar, a cloth, and patience.

The Five Levers: How Potency Is Raised or Lowered

Bhavana is one lever among five. Verse 48 states the general law: the potency of preparations is modified, upward or downward, by combination (what is added), elimination (what is removed), timing (when it is gathered, made or given), processing (how it is worked — the samskaras), and method of administration (how and in what it reaches the person). Five levers, each running in both directions: a ten-position control panel written a very long time before anyone drew control panels.

What deserves emphasis is how modern the underlying claim is. The text is saying that a preparation’s strength is not a fixed property of its ingredients — it is a function of the whole process. Two pharmacies holding identical plants can produce unequal medicines; the difference lives in season, handling, processing and delivery. Everything the chapter has taught so far — the soil, the calendar, the white-clad collector, the rope swing, the vehicle — suddenly reveals itself as one connected instrument: every stage of the chain is one of the five levers in disguise.

“Thousands, Even Crores”: The Permission to Create

And then the text does something almost no ancient authority does: it hands its reader the keys. The 600 formulations described here, say verses 49–50, should be taken as guidance. One may, however, make “thousands or crores of such formulations by his own intellect” — for there is no limit to the number of formulations, because of the abundance of substances and their variations.

The library, in other words, is open-ended by design. The counted 600 are worked examples; the real teaching is the grammar — principal and subsidiary, the five levers, the vehicles, the forms — and a grammar exists to generate sentences no one has said yet. The Charaka Samhita makes the same gesture elsewhere, in the Vimana Sthana’s discussion of the fifty mahakashaya groups, and the aphorism it uses there (Vi 8.149, quoted in these very pages) is worth carrying in the pocket: the wise physician should drop a listed substance when it does not suit and add an unlisted one when reason calls for it — for a well-made aphorism, says the text, is like alms to a mendicant or seeds to a farmer: a small thing from which the wise grow wide knowledge, while “for the dull, it is better to follow the saying exactly.” It is hard to think of another sentence, in any literature, that so gracefully divides a tradition’s users into those who may improvise and those who should not.

The Default Grammar: Equal Parts, Water, and 1 : 4 : 16

A working manual must also legislate for silence — what to do when a recipe doesn’t say. Chapter 12’s later verses (Ka 12.99–101) supply the defaults, and they are a small joy of editorial thoroughness:

No liquid named? The liquid is water.

“Pada” mentioned? Read it as one-fourth.

Cooking a sneha with no proportions given? One part herb-paste, four parts unctuous substance, sixteen parts liquid — the classical 1 : 4 : 16.

That last ratio is one of the quiet constants of the tradition. To this day, when a classical oil or ghee is prepared — a taila like those on the Ashtanga Hridaya’s oil shelf, or a ghrita from the milk shelf’s golden end — the kalka (paste), the sneha (the oil or ghee), and the drava (the liquid: water, decoction, juice, milk) stand in that 1 : 4 : 16 relation unless the recipe says otherwise. The proportions encode the method: enough liquid to cook the herb’s substance gently into the fat over a long simmer, enough fat to receive it, little enough paste that the finished sneha stays clear and workable. It is a recipe grammar so serviceable that twenty centuries have not seen a reason to change the defaults.

And how long is that simmer? The text answers with the doctrine of sneha paka — the degrees of cooking an unctuous preparation — and it is the most craftsmanlike passage in the chapter (Ka 12.102–104). The cooking of a sneha is of three degrees, and each degree has its own destiny:

Read the table twice and its logic opens like a door. The same formula is cooked to different depths depending on where it will go. The delicate nasal passage receives the gentlest cooking; the oil that will be worked into skin over a whole body is driven hardest, until the last moisture is gone and the sneha is all sneha. The compounder’s tests are all touch and eye — does the paste roll soft? does it leave the ladle? does the wick sputter or burn clean? — a laboratory of the senses, run entirely without instruments, and accurate enough that oil-makers in traditional workshops use the same three checkpoints today.

Drastic, Medium, Mild: Matching the Measure to the Person

From cooking, the chapter turns to calibration — and here the reader should remember that its subject is the classical physician’s evacuative procedures, described for scholars, not for kitchens. The text grades its measures as drastic, medium and mild (Ka 12.51–58). The drastic acts easily, quickly, with great impulse, unimpeded, and does its whole work without producing excessive malaise or harm; drasticity itself, says the text, comes from everything we have already studied — material uncontaminated by water, fire or organisms, endowed with the virtues of proper place and time, a somewhat higher measure, impregnation with juices of similar potency, and a person properly prepared with unction and warmth. The medium is the same instrument with some of those conditions relaxed; the mild is of low potency, low measure, combined with dissimilar substances.

Then the matching rule, stated with complete symmetry: persons of strong, medium and inferior constitution receive the drastic, the medium and the mild respectively — and disorders with all, some, or few of their features are graded severe, medium and mild in the same way (Ka 12.57–58). For the strong person, the text adds, with a candour that still surprises, the medium and mild measures are defective — they do not finish the work they begin. The doctrine is dose-individualisation, stated as a first principle: the measure is fitted to the person and to the state, never copied from a book. The book itself says so.

The Troubleshooting Verses: A Physician Thinking Aloud

What follows (Ka 12.59–84) is my favourite stretch of the chapter, though it contains not one quotable doctrine. It is a troubleshooting manual — twenty-odd verses of what if, clearly written by people who had stood at real bedsides while a procedure behaved unexpectedly. What if the preparation is expelled before acting, or absorbed without acting? Give again, judiciously — after assessing, says verse 60, the threefold strength of the state and the person. What if the process is sluggish and incomplete? Hot water sips. What if the material moves neither up nor down and sits painfully still? Warm fomentation. What if the person is exhausted rather than helped? Stop; support with suitable food and decoction; prefer, says verse 68, the mild measure taken again over the over-drastic taken once — “it is always safer.”

Two verses in this stretch deserve their own paragraph. Verse 79–80 notices a particular kind of person — hard-bowelled, hardened by physical exercise, of rough diet and vigorous digestive fire — in whom the purgative measure is simply digested like food and does nothing. The remedy is sequencing: give the enema first, then the purgative, and the second rides the way the first has opened. And verses 81–82 make the opposite observation: persons of rough diet, habitual exercise and strong digestive fire, whose systems are kept clear by exertion, wind, sun and fire, should not be put through evacuation at all except in illness — protect them with unction instead. The pharmacy chapter ends by telling the physician when not to use the pharmacy. That restraint, as much as any formula, is the discipline’s signature.

Poison or Nectar: The Chapter’s Last Word

Every long chapter of the classics earns its closing verse, and this one’s (Ka 12.85–86) is among the most quoted sentences in the literature:

The closing doctrine (Ka 12.85–86)

“That which is applied wrongly acts as poison. That which is applied rightly acts as nectar” — and is to be administered cautiously, at the prescribed times. Whatever measure is mentioned in this text relates to the average state; the wise make their variations from that baseline, person by person.

Poison or nectar — visha or amrita — and nothing in the substance itself decides which. The same material, the same preparation, the same measured spoonful: rightly fitted to person, time and state it is nectar; wrongly fitted it is the other thing. This is the whole chapter folded into one line. The soil rules, the collector’s calendar, the rope swing, the vehicles, the five levers, the three cookings, the grading of persons — all of it exists because the difference between a remedy and a harm was understood to lie not in the plant but in the rightness of the whole application. It is as serious a statement of the responsibility of pharmacy as any regulator has written since, and it was set in verse so that no one who memorised the chapter could ever forget it.

Reading the Pharmacy Chapters with Modern Eyes

Stand back from the details and the shape of the whole is remarkable. These pages describe, in order: controlled cultivation; seasonal harvesting by plant part; personnel standards for collection; specified storage with ventilation, pest and moisture control and daily inspection; carrier selection by user type; a naming convention for compound preparations; a potentiation process; five recognised variables of process control; explicit permission for innovation within the grammar; default proportions for unstated cases; three process endpoints with physical tests; strength grading matched to user grading; a troubleshooting protocol; and a closing statement of responsibility. A modern manufacturing professional would file every one of those under a familiar heading — sourcing, QA, storage, delivery systems, process control, batch adjustment. The vocabulary is Sanskrit; the checklist is timeless.

One editorial footnote from this edition’s translator is too practical to leave out: when herbs are cooked into oils or decoctions, chopped material is generally preferable to finely powdered — the coarse pieces strain out cleanly, where fine powder clouds the finished preparation. Twenty centuries of straining-cloth experience, delivered in a bracket. It sits beside the rope swing and the ladle test as a reminder of what these chapters fundamentally are: not mysticism about plants, but the accumulated shop-floor wisdom of people who made things carefully and wrote down how.

It is worth saying, too, what a reader should not take from the symmetry with modern practice. The correspondence is of spirit, not of evidence: the old chain expresses a culture of care, and its procedures belong to their own clinical world, evaluated by its own lights. To read the Kalpa Sthana is to watch a tradition take quality seriously with the instruments of its time — and that, precisely that, is the heritage worth keeping.

Three Classical Forms on an Ordinary Shelf

Bhaishajya Kalpana (from bheshaja, medicine, and kalpana, preparation) is the pharmaceutics of Ayurveda — the discipline of how a classical preparation is sourced, made, formed and delivered. It is still taught under this name to every BAMS student. Its founding rules live in chapters like the Charaka Samhita’s Kalpa Sthana, read in this article: where medicinal plants should grow, when each plant part is collected, how stores are kept, which vehicle (anupana) carries a preparation, how formulas are named and adjusted, and how oils and ghees are cooked to three classical degrees.

What does the Charaka Samhita say about growing and collecting medicinal herbs? +

Kalpa Sthana chapter 1 (verses 9–10, as numbered in this edition) sets the rules: plants grown in clean, even, watered ground with soft, unctuous, dark, sweet soil, screened by kusha and rohisha grasses, never overgrown by stronger plants, and never raised near cremation grounds, temples, ditches, orchards, ant-hills or barren land. Collectible plants must be seasonal, mature in taste, potency and smell, and unspoiled by time, sun, fire, water, wind or organisms. The gatherer is clean, white-clad, of benevolent conduct, and works after worship and a fast, facing east or north.

When were different plant parts collected in the classical calendar? +

By the calendar of Kalpa Sthana 1.10: branches and leaves in the rainy season and spring; roots in summer or late winter, when the leaves have fallen or fully matured; bark, tubers and latex in autumn; heartwood in early winter; and flowers and fruits each in their own season. The underlying principle is to gather each part when the plant’s vitality is concentrated in it — green growth in the growing seasons, underground strength when the leaf has withdrawn.

What is anupana in Ayurveda? +

Anupana is the vehicle — the liquid with which or in which a preparation is administered. The classical doctrine holds that the carrier shapes the journey, and Kalpa Sthana 1.12 assigns vehicles by constitution: warm, sour, grounding carriers (wine, fermented grain waters like sauviraka and tushodaka, dhanyamla, sour curd) for vata-type persons; sweet and cooling carriers (grapes, amalaka, honey, madhuka, parushaka, phanita, milk) for pitta-type persons; and light, penetrating carriers (honey, warm decoctions) for kapha-type persons. It pairs with the tradition’s equally careful doctrine of when a preparation is taken.

What is bhavana and why does it matter? +

Bhavana is the classical potentiation process of Kalpa Sthana 12.47: a powdered substance is impregnated (soaked and worked) with its own expressed juice, or the juice of a substance of similar potency, then dried — often through repeated cycles. The text’s reason is compact: “even a small drug, if impregnated well, exerts multiple actions.” Each cycle loads the same small mass with more of the plant’s soluble fraction, so concentration rises while bulk and dose stay small — a principle any modern formulator would recognise.

What are the three degrees of sneha paka? +

Sneha paka is the cooking of unctuous preparations — oils and ghees. Kalpa Sthana 12.102–104 grades it in three degrees, each with a physical test and a destined use: mild cooking (the tradition’s mridu paka), where the product stays soft like the herb paste — used for snuffing; medium cooking (madhyama paka), like a soft wheat cake that no longer sticks to the ladle — used for intake and the classical enema; and hard cooking (khara paka, “charred”), where the residue disintegrates during wicking — used for massage. The same formula is cooked to a different depth depending on where it will go.

What does the “600 formulas” passage mean — and could new formulas be created? +

Kalpa Sthana 12.41–42 totals the section’s preparations: 355 of one evacuative class and 245 of the other — 600 formulas built mainly from 15 plants. Verses 49–50 then declare the library open-ended: the 600 are guidance, and one may make “thousands or crores of such formulations by his own intellect,” because substances and their variations are without limit. The permission is disciplined elsewhere by the famous aphorism of Vimana Sthana 8.149: the wise may adapt a listed group by reason — dropping the unsuitable, adding the unmentioned — while “for the dull, it is better to follow the saying exactly.”
