Nariyal Tel in the Charaka Samhita: Why Narikela Is Missing from Ayurveda's Chapter on Oils

The short version

Nariyal tel is coconut oil. Its Sanskrit name is Narikela Taila. And here is the thing almost nobody mentions: when you open the chapter that the Charaka Samhita devotes to oils and fats, coconut is not in it. Charaka lists eighteen oil-yielding plants by name in Sutrasthana 13. Tila (sesame) heads the list. Eranda (castor), sarsapa (mustard), atasi (linseed), aksoda (walnut) all appear. Narikela does not. Vagbhata's own group of oils in Ashtanga Hridaya Sutrasthana 5 names five oils, and coconut is not one of them either.

Coconut is in both books. It is just filed somewhere else — among the fruits. And the five words Charaka uses for it there (brimhana, snigdha, sheeta, balya, madhura) turn out to explain almost everything people notice about nariyal tel in practice: why it sets solid in December, why it suits a Chennai summer better than a Delhi January, and why the abhyanga rule in Ashtanga Hridaya quietly points away from it for some people.

Nariyal Tel: The Short Answer, Before Anything Else

Nariyal tel is the Hindi name for coconut oil, pressed from the dried white kernel of Cocos nucifera. In Sanskrit the tree and its fruit are Narikela, so the oil is Narikela Taila. Ayurveda describes it as madhura (sweet in taste), snigdha (unctuous), guru (heavy), sheeta (cold in potency), brimhana (bulk-building) and balya (strengthening). Those six words are not marketing. They come from the fruit sections of the classical texts, and they are the reason nariyal tel behaves the way it does — solidifying in cold weather, sitting easily on hot skin, feeling heavier on the scalp than a light sesame or mustard oil.

That is the answer to the search. The rest of this article is the part that surprised us when we went back to the primary sources: Narikela Taila is not listed in either of the two great classical chapters on oils. Not in Charaka's, not in Vagbhata's. Coconut is unmistakably present in both books — but as a fruit, sitting between the plantain and the date, not as an oil sitting beside sesame and castor. That filing decision, made somewhere before the Common Era, still governs how a classically trained vaidya thinks about the bottle in your kitchen.

We want to be exact about the claim, because it is easy to overstate. We are not saying coconut oil is absent from Ayurveda, or that classical physicians never used it. Regional and later traditions, particularly along the Malabar and Konkan coasts where the tree actually grows, use it constantly. What we are saying is narrower and checkable: in Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana, chapter 13, where Charaka enumerates the plant sources of sneha, narikela is not among the names. And in Ashtanga Hridaya, Sutrasthana, chapter 5, where Vagbhata gives his group of oils, narikela taila is not among the five he describes. Both lists are short enough to read in a minute. We read them.

Narikela Taila: What the Sanskrit Name Actually Carries

Start with the word taila, because it is doing quiet work. In classical usage taila does not mean "oil" in the loose modern sense of any pressed fat. It derives from tila, sesame. Sesame oil is taila; everything else is taila by extension and normally carries its source in front of it — eranda taila, sarsapa taila, nimba taila, narikela taila.

You can watch this convention operate inside Charaka. In Sutrasthana 1, when the four kinds of fat are assigned to four uses, the text says fat is of four types — ghrita (ghee), taila (oil), vasa (muscle fat) and majja (marrow) — used respectively for intake, massage, enema and snuff. The translator has to add a gloss at the second item, because in the original the unqualified word simply means sesame oil. Ghee for eating; oil, meaning sesame oil, for massage. When the classical texts say "oil" without qualification, they mean tila taila. This is worth holding on to, because a great deal of loose modern writing takes a classical sentence about taila and silently swaps in coconut.

So Narikela Taila is a compound that announces itself as a departure from the default. It is the oil of the narikela, named because it is not the oil that would otherwise be assumed. Every time you see the full two-word name in a classical or classical-style text, the qualifier is telling you that a substitution has been made deliberately.

Three words worth keeping straight

Sneha — the whole category of unctuous, oleating substances. Ghee, oil, muscle fat and marrow are the four sneha. The word also means affection, which is not an accident.
Taila — strictly, sesame oil; loosely, any pressed plant oil, in which case it takes the plant's name in front.
Narikela — the coconut. In Ashtanga Hridaya's own glossary of plants it is identified as Cocos nucifera.

Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana 13: Eighteen Plants, and Narikela Is Not One

Chapter 13 of the Sutrasthana of the Charaka Samhita is the chapter on oleation. It is where the whole logic of sneha is laid out: what oleation does, who it is for, who it is not for, what goes wrong when it is done badly, and which substances are used.

Charaka divides sneha sources into two at the outset — those of plant origin and those of animal origin. Then he names the plant ones. In the Van Loon edition the marker is Su13#10, and the list reads: tila (sesame), priyala, abhisuka, bibhitaka, danti, haritaki, eranda (castor), madhuka, sarsapa (mustard), kusumbha (safflower), bilwa, aruka, mulaka (radish), atasi (linseed), nikocaka, aksoda (walnut), karanja and sigru (drumstick). Eighteen names. Read them again and notice what is missing.

The animal sources follow immediately: fish, four-footed animals, birds, and from them curd, milk, ghee, meat, muscle fat and bone marrow. Then Charaka ranks. Among the oils, tila is called best for strength and for oleation, and eranda best for purgation — castor being described as pungent, hot, heavy, and pacifying vata and kapha. A little further on he names ghee the single finest sneha of all, on the grounds that it carries forward the qualities of whatever is cooked into it. Then the famous four: ghrita, taila, vasa, majja.

Nowhere in that sequence does coconut appear. Not in the eighteen, not in the ranking, not in the four. We have written separately about how this chapter sets out oleation in full, and the omission holds all the way through it.

Why an absence is evidence

An absence in a classical list is only meaningful if the list is meant to be complete. Charaka's is close to it: he is enumerating the plant materials a physician draws sneha from, and he goes to the trouble of including minor items such as nikocaka and aruka. Leaving out a commodity as conspicuous as coconut is unlikely to be an oversight. The likelier reading is regional. The Charaka tradition is northern and inland; the coconut palm is coastal. It is not that coconut was rejected. It is that it was somewhere else.

Vagbhata's Group of Oils: Ashtanga Hridaya Sutrasthana 5

Chapter 5 of the Sutrasthana of the Ashtanga Hridaya is Drava-dravya Vijnaniya Adhyaya, the chapter on liquid substances. Vagbhata sorts every liquid a physician handles into seven groups: jala (water), kshira (milk), ikshu (sugarcane products), madhu (honey), taila (oils), madya (fermented drinks) and mutra (urines). Water gets the longest treatment and the first position, on the argument that all water is ultimately one substance falling from the sky.

The group of oils occupies about three printed pages. Vagbhata describes five oils in it, in this order: tila taila (gingelly or sesame), eranda taila (castor), sarsapa taila (mustard), aksa taila (the oil of vibhitaka) and nimba taila (neem).

That is the whole group. Five oils. No narikela taila. Our longer piece on Vagbhata's oils goes through each of the five and what he says about it. Here the relevant point is only the boundary of the set.

Two independent authorities, separated by centuries and by tradition, both write a dedicated section on oils, and neither includes coconut. At that point an omission stops looking like an accident of one manuscript and starts looking like a shared classification. So the question becomes: if coconut is not an oil, what is it?

Where Narikela Actually Sits: Charaka Sutrasthana 27

Chapter 27 of Charaka's Sutrasthana is Annapana-vidhi Adhyaya, the long chapter on food and drink. It is one of the biggest chapters in the book, and it works by groups: grains, pulses, meats, vegetables, fruits, and so on down to prepared dishes and water. In the group of fruits, between the description of amrata and the description of bhavya, sits this line:

Brimhana. Snigdha. Sheeta. Balya. Madhura. Five qualities, one sentence, shared with the palmyra palm.

Vagbhata files it identically. In Ashtanga Hridaya, Sutrasthana 6 (Annasvarupa Vijnaniya Adhyaya), the chapter that sorts food into seven groups, verses 20 and 21 gather moca (plantain), kharjura (date), panasa (jackfruit), narikela (coconut), parusaka, amrataka, tala, kasmarya, rajadana, madhuka, badara, ankola, phalgu, slesmataka, badama (almond), abhisuka, aksoda, nikocaka, urumana and priyala into one bundle and gives them shared qualities: madhura rasa, guru, and the rest. Here is why this matters practically rather than academically. Ayurveda does not describe substances by their chemistry. It describes them by rasa (taste), guna (quality), virya (potency) and vipaka (post-digestive effect). Where a substance is filed determines which set of descriptions it inherits. File coconut with the oils and it inherits the generally warming, vata-pacifying, penetrating character that the oil group carries. File it with the sweet heavy fruits and it inherits sweetness, heaviness, coldness and bulk. The classical texts chose the second. Everything downstream follows from that choice.

Sheeta: The One Word That Explains Nariyal Tel

Of the five words, sheeta is the one that does the most work. Virya is the potency of a substance, the direction in which it pushes the body, and it is reckoned in the classical system as either ushna (hot) or sheeta (cold). Sesame is ushna. Mustard is ushna. Castor is described by Charaka as hot. Coconut, in the fruit group, is sheeta.

You can see it without any theory at all. Nariyal tel is the household oil that goes cloudy and then solid when the room drops below about 24 °C, and stays liquid all summer. In Kerala it is liquid nearly all year. In a Delhi January it is a white block. No other common Indian kitchen oil does this so visibly. The physical behaviour and the classical label point the same way.

This is also why the geography of nariyal tel in India is so lopsided. It is the everyday hair and body oil of the coastal south and west, where the climate is hot and humid for most of the year, and a comparative rarity in the cold, dry north-western winter, where mustard has always been the default. That is not merely a matter of what grows locally. A sheeta, guru, snigdha substance is well matched to heat and poorly matched to cold, and the regional habit tracks the classification closely.

The winter solidification, read classically

People often ask whether coconut oil turning solid means it has gone off. It does not. A pressed fat solidifies at its own melting point, and coconut oil's is unusually high among common oils. Read through the classical vocabulary, the same fact is simply sheeta and guru made visible: a cold, heavy substance behaving coldly and heavily. Warming the container in hot water returns it to liquid without changing anything.

Snigdha, Brimhana, Balya, Madhura: Charaka's Four Other Words

Snigdha means unctuous, oily, the opposite of ruksha (dry). It is the quality that makes any substance a candidate for sneha in the first place, and coconut has it in full. This is the point of overlap with the oil group, and it is presumably why coastal practice reached for coconut so readily even though the northern texts had not listed it.

Guru, heavy, is the counterpart Vagbhata attaches to the whole sweet-fruit bundle in Sutrasthana 6. Heavy in Ayurveda means slow to digest and substantial in effect. On the scalp and skin it corresponds to something people describe without the vocabulary: nariyal tel feels more present than a light oil, sits longer, takes more washing to remove.

Brimhana means bulk-promoting, building, the opposite of langhana (reducing). It belongs to the family of terms Ayurveda uses for substances that add substance to the body.

Balya means strength-giving, from bala, strength. And madhura, sweet, is the first and heaviest of the six tastes, classically associated with nourishment and with building tissue.

Put the five together and a consistent picture emerges: a cold, heavy, sweet, unctuous, building substance. Not a light one, not a penetrating one, not a warming one. Whatever else you believe about coconut oil, the classical reading of it is remarkably coherent, and it has been stable across at least two traditions for a very long time.

Nariyal Tel and Kapha: Reading the Qualities Together

In classical reasoning, qualities are not a list of independent facts. They combine, and the combination points somewhere. Madhura, guru, snigdha and sheeta are four of the defining attributes of kapha itself. A substance carrying all four is, by the logic of like-increases-like, going to increase kapha and decrease vata and pitta.

That single inference explains most of what people report about nariyal tel and never quite connect. It explains why it suits hot, dry, irritated conditions of the skin and hair in the classical framing, and why in a damp coastal monsoon some people find it heavy on the scalp. It explains why the vata-dominant person, who is dry, light and cold, generally gets on well with it in warm weather — the unctuousness and the building quality are opposite to their own — and why the same person in a cold January is often told to warm it first, because the coldness of the substance is now adding to the coldness of the season. And it explains why the kapha-dominant person, already heavy, cool and unctuous, is the one the classical logic points away from.

A note on how to read all of this

Everything above is a description of what classical Sanskrit texts say about a substance and how they classify it. It is historical and textual description, not instruction, and not a procedure to be attempted in place of care from a qualified professional. Individual constitution, season and existing conditions all change what is appropriate, and only a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner can weigh those for a particular person.

Abhyanga in Ashtanga Hridaya Sutrasthana 2: What the Rule Says

Abhyanga is oil massage, and it appears in Ashtanga Hridaya, Sutrasthana 2, the Dinacharya chapter, in the middle of a sequence that runs through waking, tooth-cleaning, anjana, nasya, gandusha, betel, oil massage, exercise, udvartana and finally snana, the bath. It is, in other words, one item in a daily order of operations, not a treatment.

Vagbhata's description of what regular abhyanga does is brief and often quoted: it delays ageing, relieves shrama (fatigue) and pacifies vata; it is credited with good vision, strength and long life; it gives the skin toughness and good appearance. He then singles out three sites for particular attention — the head, the ears and the soles of the feet — alongside the body as a whole. Oil and cloth. Abhyanga sits in the middle of Vagbhata's daily order, between betel and exercise — a routine, not a treatment.

What is less often quoted is the paragraph immediately after. Vagbhata gives three states in which abhyanga is set aside: in kapha-dominant conditions, during the course of shodhana therapy, and in ajirna, the state of undigested food. The chapter summary at the back of the volume repeats it as a bare rule.

Notice what happens when you lay that beside the coconut classification. The practice itself is withheld in kapha conditions. And the substance in question is madhura, guru, snigdha and sheeta — the kapha quality set. The two statements were written for different reasons in different chapters, and neither mentions the other, but they converge. For the classical reasoner, nariyal tel is the summer oil, the pitta oil, the coastal oil — and the one whose qualities argue least well for a cold damp morning in a body already carrying heaviness.

Murdha Taila: Vagbhata's Four Ways of Putting Oil on the Head

Since a very large share of nariyal tel in India goes on the head rather than into the pan, it is worth knowing that the classical system has a whole vocabulary for this, and that abhyanga is only the first rung of it.

In Ashtanga Hridaya, Sutrasthana 23, Vagbhata sets out murdha taila, the application of oil to the head, in four kinds:

  • Abhyanga — gently massaging the head after applying oil. Siro abhyanga, the ordinary head oiling almost every Indian household knows.
  • Pariseka or sirah-seka — pouring warm oil over the forehead in a systematic stream, using a vessel suspended above.
  • Picu — keeping a pad of cotton or gauze soaked in oil on the head.
  • Sirovasti — retaining oil on the head within a fitted enclosure.

Vagbhata adds one line that reorganises the whole set: these four are superior to one another in their succeeding order. The simplest is the weakest and the most elaborate the strongest, and the ordering is explicit rather than implied. The three beyond abhyanga are clinical procedures performed under supervision; they are not domestic practices and cannot be attempted at home. What sits at the bottom of that ladder — oil, hands, the head — is the one every family already does.

Narikela and Milk: The Viruddha Line in Charaka Sutrasthana 26

Viruddha ahara is the classical doctrine of incompatible food. Charaka devotes a long section of Sutrasthana 26 to it, and the list is unusually specific — not vague advice about eating well, but named pairs that are said to be antagonistic when combined.

Coconut is on it. In the run of milk incompatibilities, Charaka states that milk is antagonistic with all fruits except the purely sweet ones such as the date, and then names them: amra, amrataka, matulunga, nikuca, karamarda, moca, dantasatha, badara, kosamra, bhavya, jambu, narikela, dadima and amalaka.

This is a nice illustration of what filing coconut as a fruit actually costs it. Because it is in the fruit group, it inherits the fruit group's incompatibilities. Nothing in the oil chapters would have produced this rule. Worth being careful with this one

The classical statement is about the fruit and about milk. It is not a statement about a spoon of coconut oil in cooking, and it should not be stretched into one. Where the texts are specific, quoting them precisely is the whole point; where they are silent, the honest answer is that they are silent.

One more placement, and it is the most concrete of them. Ashtanga Hridaya, Sutrasthana 8 is Matrashitiya Adhyaya, the chapter on eating in the right measure. It contains the well-known instruction to divide the stomach into four parts and fill two with food, one with liquid and leave one empty.

It also contains a rule about order within a meal. Substances that are madhura in taste and guru, snigdha, manda and sthira in quality are to be taken at the beginning of the meal. Vagbhata names examples: bisa (lotus stalk), ikshu (sugarcane), moca or kadali (banana), coca or narikela (coconut), amra (mango), and sweet preparations such as modaka. Substances with the opposite qualities — katu, laghu, ruksha, tikshna, sara — belong at the end. Sour and salty things belong in the middle.

Coconut therefore has a defined position in a classical meal, and it is at the front. Which is exactly where the heavy, sweet, cold group would be placed by someone thinking in terms of digestive fire: the heaviest material meets the strongest agni. Cold-Pressed, Ghani and Refined: What the Classical Category Cannot Tell You

Everything so far comes out of texts written long before industrial expeller pressing, solvent extraction, bleaching and deodorising existed. So there is a limit to what the classical category can settle, and it is worth naming it plainly rather than papering over it.

What the texts do give us is a strong general preference for minimally processed substances and a repeated insistence that quality of material determines quality of result. Charaka's food chapter is full of it — his instruction that vegetables affected by insects, wind or sun, or dried, old, out of season, or not properly prepared, are unfit to eat, is the same principle applied to a different commodity.

What the texts cannot give us is any statement about chakku or wood-pressed versus expeller versus refined coconut oil, because those distinctions did not exist to be discussed. Any article that claims Charaka endorsed cold-pressing is inventing a citation. He did not, because he could not.

The honest position is this. Cold pressing keeps the temperature of extraction low, which preserves the aroma and the colour and avoids the deodorising steps that strip them. That is a claim about process and about what you can smell and taste, and it stands on its own without needing a Sanskrit verse behind it. Where a classical principle genuinely applies — use good material, use it fresh, use it in season — we will cite it. Where it does not, we will say so.

Nariyal Tel Through the Ritu: Grishma, Varsha, Hemanta

Ritucharya, seasonal regimen, is the second great organising idea of classical daily life after dinacharya. The principle is simple: the season has qualities, you have qualities, and the substances you use should be chosen against the combination rather than out of habit.

Applied to a sheeta, guru, snigdha substance, the classical logic falls out fairly directly:

It is ritucharya working itself out over a couple of thousand years of practice, and the classical description of coconut predicted it.

What the Classical Texts Do Not Say About Nariyal Tel

We think this section is the most useful one in the article, because the internet is full of the opposite. A few things we looked for and did not find:

  • No entry in either oil chapter. Charaka's eighteen plant sources of sneha in Sutrasthana 13 do not include narikela. Vagbhata's five oils in Sutrasthana 5 do not include it. We checked both lists directly rather than relying on secondary summaries.
  • No classical ranking of coconut oil against sesame. Charaka ranks within his own list — tila best for strength and oleation, eranda best for purgation. Coconut is not in the comparison, so any statement that a classical text called it superior or inferior to sesame is manufactured.
  • No verse about hair growth from coconut oil. The keshya herbs of the classical materia medica are named individually, and coconut is not among the named ones. Where our own hair oil uses a coconut base, that is a formulation choice made in a modern kitchen, not a classical prescription we are quoting.
  • Nothing about cold pressing, purity grades or processing methods, for the reasons set out above.

What the texts do give, and give consistently, is a placement and five adjectives. That turns out to be a great deal — enough to explain the geography, the season, the solidification and the constitutional fit. It is just not the same thing as a therapeutic endorsement, and the difference is worth keeping.

What is nariyal tel in Ayurveda? +

Nariyal tel is coconut oil, and its Sanskrit name is Narikela Taila. In Ayurveda it is described as madhura (sweet), snigdha (unctuous), guru (heavy), sheeta (cold in potency), brimhana (bulk-building) and balya (strengthening). Those words come from the fruit sections of the classical texts rather than from the oil sections, which is the surprising part. Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana 27 places narikela in the group of fruits alongside the palmyra palm, and Ashtanga Hridaya Sutrasthana 6 puts it with the plantain, the date and the jackfruit. In plain terms: Ayurveda classifies coconut as a sweet, heavy, cooling substance, and that classification is what explains its behaviour, including why it solidifies in winter and why it is the everyday oil of the hot coastal south rather than the cold north.

Why is coconut oil not in the Charaka Samhita's chapter on oils? +

The most likely reason is geography. Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana 13 lists eighteen plant sources of sneha by name, from tila and eranda through to atasi, aksoda and sigru, and narikela is not among them. The Charaka tradition is northern and inland, while the coconut palm is a coastal tree. The same absence appears in Ashtanga Hridaya Sutrasthana 5, where Vagbhata's group of oils names five oils and coconut is not one of them. Both authors clearly knew the coconut, because both describe it in detail elsewhere in the same books. They simply classified it as a fruit rather than as an oil-yielding plant. It is an absence from one list, not an absence from Ayurveda.

Is nariyal tel hot or cold in Ayurveda? +

Cold. Virya is the classical term for the potency of a substance, and it is reckoned as either ushna (hot) or sheeta (cold). Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana 27 describes the ripe fruit of narikela as sheeta. This is the single most consequential thing the texts say about it, because it separates coconut from every other common Indian pressed oil. Sesame is hot. Mustard is hot. Charaka describes castor as hot. Coconut is cold, and you can see it in the way the oil sets solid below about 24 degrees Celsius while the others stay liquid. In classical reasoning a sheeta substance is well matched to hot conditions and less well matched to cold ones.

What does Narikela Taila mean? +

Narikela is the Sanskrit name for the coconut, identified in Ashtanga Hridaya's own list of plants as Cocos nucifera. Taila means oil, but with a wrinkle worth knowing: the word derives from tila, sesame, and in classical usage an unqualified taila means sesame oil specifically. Every other oil carries its source in front of the word, which is why the compound is Narikela Taila and not simply taila. You can see the convention at work in Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana 1, where fat is divided into four kinds and the second, taila, is assigned to massage; translators have to gloss it as sesame oil because that is what the original assumes.

Which dosha is coconut oil best for? +

By classical reasoning, pitta and vata. Ayurveda works on the rule that like increases like, so a substance's qualities tell you which dosha it raises and which it settles. Coconut is madhura, guru, snigdha and sheeta, and those four are among the defining qualities of kapha itself. A substance carrying them will tend to increase kapha and to settle vata and pitta. That is the textual logic, not a recommendation for any individual: constitution, season, digestive strength and existing conditions all change what is appropriate for a particular person, and only a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner can weigh those together.

Why does nariyal tel become solid in winter? +

Because pure coconut oil has an unusually high melting point among common oils, around 24 degrees Celsius, so it sets when the room drops below that. It has not gone off, and the change is fully reversible by standing the container in warm water. Read through classical vocabulary, the same fact is simply sheeta and guru made visible: a substance the texts call cold and heavy behaving coldly and heavily. It is also a rough indicator of purity, since blends with lighter oils stay liquid at temperatures where pure coconut oil would have set.

Can coconut be taken with milk according to Ayurveda? +

The classical texts say no. Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana 26, the chapter on viruddha ahara or incompatible food, states that milk is antagonistic with all fruits except the purely sweet ones such as dates, and then names them individually. Narikela appears in that list alongside amra, jambu, dadima and amalaka. Note the exact scope: the statement is about the coconut as a fruit combined with milk. It is not a statement about coconut oil used in cooking, and stretching it into one would be reading more into the text than it says. Charaka also notes that habituation, quantity, digestive strength and season all modify how much any single incompatibility matters.

Is coconut oil good for abhyanga? +

The classical texts do not name it for abhyanga. Ashtanga Hridaya Sutrasthana 2 describes abhyanga as part of the daily routine and credits it with delaying ageing, relieving fatigue and pacifying vata, but where the classical texts specify an oil for massage without qualification they mean tila taila, sesame. Vagbhata also sets out three states in which abhyanga is withheld: kapha-dominant conditions, the course of shodhana therapy, and ajirna. Since coconut carries the kapha quality set, the classical logic points toward it in hot weather and away from it in cold, damp conditions. This is a description of what the texts say, not medical advice.

What is the difference between nariyal tel and sesame oil in Ayurveda? +

They sit in different categories and have opposite potencies. Tila taila is the classical default oil: it heads Charaka's list of sneha sources in Sutrasthana 13, it is called best for strength and oleation, it is ushna or hot in potency, and it is what an unqualified taila means. Narikela is not in that chapter at all. It appears in the fruit group, where it is described as sheeta or cold, along with madhura, snigdha, guru, brimhana and balya. In practice the split shows up as a regional one: warming sesame and mustard in the cold, dry north, cooling coconut along the hot coasts.

Does Ayurveda say coconut oil is good for hair growth? +

Not in the classical texts we can check. The keshya herbs, the ones classically associated with hair, are named individually in the materia medica, and coconut is not among them. What the texts give for coconut is a placement in the fruit group and five qualities. Where a modern Ayurvedic hair oil uses a coconut base, as ours does, the coconut is serving as the carrier for the keshya herbs infused into it rather than as the classical hero of the formula. We would rather say that plainly than attach a Sanskrit citation to a claim the Sanskrit does not make.

What is murdha taila? +

Murdha taila is the classical term for applying oil to the head, and Ashtanga Hridaya Sutrasthana 23 divides it into four kinds: abhyanga, gentle massage after applying oil; pariseka or sirah-seka, pouring warm oil over the forehead in a stream; picu, keeping an oil-soaked pad on the head; and sirovasti, retaining oil on the head within a fitted enclosure. Vagbhata says explicitly that the four are superior to one another in their succeeding order, so the simplest is the mildest. Only the first is a household practice. The other three are clinical procedures that require a trained practitioner and cannot be attempted at home.

Where should coconut come in a meal, according to Ayurveda? +

At the beginning. Ashtanga Hridaya Sutrasthana 8, the Matrashitiya chapter on eating in the right measure, gives an order for a meal by quality. Substances that are madhura in taste and guru, snigdha, manda and sthira in quality go first, and Vagbhata names lotus stalk, sugarcane, banana, coconut, mango and sweet preparations as examples. Things with the opposite qualities, katu, laghu, ruksha, tikshna and sara, come at the end, and sour and salty things in the middle. The reasoning is that the heaviest material should meet the strongest digestive fire, which is at the start of the meal.

The Filing Decision, and Why It Still Holds

Somewhere in the long formation of the classical corpus, someone decided that the coconut was a fruit. Not an oil seed like tila or atasi, not a purgative like eranda, but a sweet, heavy, cold fruit belonging with the plantain and the date. The decision is recorded twice, in two traditions, and it was never revisited.

Two thousand years later, that decision is still doing work. It is why a bottle of nariyal tel is a white block in a Delhi January and clear liquid in a Kochi one. It is why the household oil of the Malabar coast never became the household oil of Punjab. It is why the classical reasoner will hand you sesame for a cold morning and coconut for a hot afternoon without appearing to consult anything. And it is why the honest classical answer to what does Ayurveda say about nariyal tel is not a list of benefits at all. It is a placement, and five adjectives, and the discipline to not add a sixth.
