Yes. Multiple classical sources - including Bhoja-Prabandha by Pandita Ballala, Sushruta Samhita, and Thakur Saheb of Gondal's Short History of Aryan Medical Science - record the surgical use of a herbal anaesthetic called Sammohini and a revival drug called Sanjivani. The 11th-century operation on King Bhoja included craniotomy under Sammohini sedation and recovery via Sanjivani. The continuous practice of surgical anaesthesia in India extends back to at least the time of Jivaka, the personal physician of the Buddha (6th century BCE) - roughly 2400 years before William Morton's public demonstration of ether anaesthesia in Boston (1846).

What was Sammohini made of - can it be reproduced today? +

The exact botanical formulation of Sammohini was a guarded secret of vaidya lineages. Known classical candidates include Dhattura (Datura metel - tropane alkaloids), Bhanga (Cannabis indica), Ahiphena (opium poppy), Madya (medicated alcoholic preparations), and inhaled aromatic preparations. Modern reproduction is restricted because the source herbs are heavily regulated, dose-sensitive and dangerous outside trained vaidya supervision. The historical significance is that classical Indian surgeons knew how to use these herbs safely under operating conditions - not that the modern householder should attempt to reproduce them.

What is Sanjivani - is it a real drug or a myth from the Ramayana? +

Both, in different senses. In the Ramayana, Sanjivani Booti is the herb Hanuman retrieves to revive Lakshmana - a mythological narrative. In classical Indian surgical pharmacology, Sanjivani refers to a class of revival drugs administered to bring a patient out of deep anaesthesia (after Sammohini). The plant most associated with the classical Sanjivani name is Selaginella bryopteris, a resurrection plant found in the Garhwal Himalayas. Whether any modern preparation reproduces the full classical Sanjivani effect is an active question in Ayurvedic and biotech research.

What is the Avagharshana dissection method? +

Avagharshana is Sushruta's classical anatomical dissection technique. A dead body is covered with kusa grass and placed at the edge of a slow-moving stream for three days. The water and microbial action softens the outer tissues without dissolving them. The body is then removed and the macerated layers (epidermis, dermis, muscles) are gently brushed off one at a time with a soft brush. Because the dissolution is uniform and there is no cutting, the finest arteries and veins - which scalpel dissection slices through and destroys - swell up and become visible to the eye. The method is more precise than modern scalpel dissection for studying the microvasculature.

Did Sushruta really come before Hippocrates? +

Yes. Sushruta is dated to roughly the 6th century BCE in conservative scholarly estimates - and earlier in traditional Indian accounts. Hippocrates lived in the 5th century BCE. Herophilus of Alexandria, generally credited with the first openly-practised human dissection in the West, lived in the 3rd century BCE. Sushruta's dissection method, surgical instruments, and anatomical theory were already mature before Hippocrates was born. The classical Indian author of the Sushruta Samhita Volume II Introduction puts it plainly: "Though the merit of discovering this mode of dissection is due to Sushruta, we are all blind to it and call Hippocrates the father of Medicine!"
