Where Kalpa Sthana 11 and 12 Sit in the Charaka Samhita

The Charaka Samhita is organised into eight sthanas and one hundred and twenty chapters, and the seventh of those eight is the Kalpa Sthana — twelve chapters that do nothing but describe how the plants used in the two great evacuative procedures are gathered, kept and made into things a physician can actually hand over. It is the most workshop-like part of the whole compendium. There is no philosophy in it and almost no argument. There are plants, parts of plants, containers, seasons, and lists.

The twelve chapters run in a fixed order and each is named for the plant or plants it covers. The early ones deal with the emetic drugs; madanaphala opens the section and jimutaka, ikshvaku and dhamargava follow. From the middle of the Sthana onwards the subject turns to the purgative drugs, and trivrt, vatsaka and krtavedhana occupy chapters four through seven. Chapters eight, nine and ten take aragvadha, tilvaka and snuhi. That leaves the last two: Charaka Samhita, Kalpa Sthana, chapter 11 on saptala and sankhini, and Kalpa Sthana, chapter 12 on danti and dravanti.

Every one of these chapters has the same skeleton, and once you have seen it once you can read any of them at speed. First a line of synonyms for each plant. Then a short line saying which conditions the drug is directed at. Then a note on collection and storage — which part, in what state, kept how. Then the formulas. Then, at the very end, a closing summary that counts the formulas by type and states a total.

It is the last of those — the closing count — that makes chapters 11 and 12 worth a careful hour. The count does not match what is on the page. It is not wrong. It is telling you that you have been reading the chapter incorrectly.

Saptala and Sankhini: Why a Chapter Is Named for Two Plants

The first thing to notice about Kalpa Sthana, chapter 11 is its title. It is not the chapter of saptala. It is the chapter of saptala and sankhini. Chapter 12 does the same thing: danti and dravanti. Two plants, one chapter, one shared set of formulas.

A modern reader is likely to take this as an editorial convenience — two minor drugs bundled together to save space. The chapter itself says otherwise. When it comes to describe a ghrta, it says the same preparation may be made with the duals of danti–dravanti, ajasrngi–ajagandha, ksirini–nilika, both types of karanja, and masuravidala–pratyakparni.

Read that list again and notice what is uniform about it. Every substitute is itself a pair. Not one is a single plant. One of them — “both types of karanja” — is a pair manufactured out of a single plant by taking two of its varieties, which is a very strong hint that the pairing is not incidental. The slot in the formula is shaped to receive two plants, so a single plant is split in half to fill it.

The unit of the Kalpa Sthana is the couple, not the herb

Saptala–sankhini is a pair. Danti–dravanti is a pair. The five substitutes offered in chapter 11 are all pairs. When a classical pharmacy substitutes, it substitutes pair for pair — which means the smallest replaceable unit in these chapters is not a plant at all.

This is worth holding onto, because it changes what a “formula” means here. If the atom is a couple, then a formula is not a list of ingredients in the modern sense. It is a shape with a small number of positions in it, and each position has a type. One position takes a pair of sharp roots. One takes a fat. One takes a liquid to give it in. Fill the positions correctly and you have a valid preparation, whether or not anyone ever wrote that particular combination down.

You can see the same instinct at work all over classical Ayurveda once you are looking for it. The named herb groups — trikatu, pancakola, dashamula are exactly this: fixed bundles that travel as a single item through hundreds of formulas. Chapter 12 uses dashamula in precisely that way, dropping a ten-root group into a preparation as though it were one substance.

Carmasahva, Bahuphenarasa, Tiktala, Yavatikta: The Synonym Lines

Both chapters open the same way, and it is the least glamorous and most practical thing in them. Before any formula, before the indications, the text gives the other names each plant goes by.

For saptala: carmasahva and bahuphenarasa. For sankhini: tiktala, yavatikta and aksipidika. Chapter 12 does the same for its pair — danti is also udumbaraparni, nikumbha and mukulaka; dravanti is also citra, nyagrodhi and musikahvaya.

Look at where those names come from and you find three different naming instincts sitting side by side.

  • From the leaf. Udumbaraparni is “the one whose leaves are like the udumbara’s”. Nyagrodhi reaches for the nyagrodha, the banyan. A plant is identified by pointing at a bigger, more famous plant that everybody already knows.
  • From behaviour. Bahuphenarasa decomposes as bahu (much) + phena (foam) + rasa (juice): the plant whose juice foams a great deal. Yavatikta pairs yava, barley, with tikta, bitter.
  • From elsewhere entirely. Musikahvaya is “called by the mouse’s name”. Mukulaka points at a bud.

Why spend the opening lines of a chapter on this? Because a compendium that is copied by hand and carried across a subcontinent has a problem no modern pharmacopoeia has: the same plant is called different things four hundred kilometres away, and the same word means different plants in different mouths. The synonym line is a name-resolution layer. It is the text saying: if the person you learned from called it carmasahva, this is the chapter you want.

It is also, quietly, an admission. A tradition that felt certain its names were stable would not need to open every chapter with a list of aliases. The emetic chapters do exactly the same thing, and the Sushruta Samhita and the Ashtanga Hridaya of Vagbhata both carry comparable synonym apparatus. The classical authors knew their vocabulary was the weakest joint in the whole structure, and they braced it first.

Thirty-Nine Preparations, Nine Written Out

Now to the thing that makes these two chapters interesting. Kalpa Sthana, chapter 11 closes with a summary in the chapter’s own voice. It counts the preparations by type and states a total: sixteen with decoctions, six in oil, eight in ghee, five in fermented liquors, three as linctus, one with kampillaka — “thus total thirty-nine tested formulations of saptala and sankhini have been said. They are useful in combination or separately.”

Thirty-nine. Then go back to the top of the chapter and count what is physically written out as a preparation with its own components. You will get somewhere around nine, depending on how generous you are about what counts as a separate entry. The chapter is not long. It does not contain thirty-nine of anything.

The gap is not a copying error and it is not a lost passage. Chapter 10 does the same thing on the page just before. Kalpa Sthana, chapter 10 ends by adding up seven preparations with sauviraka and the rest, one each with ghee, meat soup and syrup, one for inhalation and one as a linctus, three with soup, two with dried fish and meat, one as wine and two as ghrtas — “thus a total of twenty formulations”. Add those figures: 7 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 3 + 2 + 1 + 2. It comes to twenty exactly. The counts are careful. They are audited. They are simply counting something other than the paragraphs.

Read the count as a specification, not a summary

The closing figure is not a description of how much text follows. It is a statement of how many valid preparations the chapter defines — including every one that it defines by rule rather than by writing it out.

Six Oils From Two: The Substitution Rule, Counted

The oil column is where the whole thing becomes provable, because it is small enough to check by hand.

Chapter 11 contains exactly two written-out oil preparations. The first is built on the vidarigandhadi group with milk, brought together with the paste of the chapter’s two plants and half parts of trivrt and syama, and cooked into an oil. The second is a different construction entirely: powdered sankhini and powdered sesame, impregnated in a decoction of haritaki, and prepared into an oil.

Then comes one short sentence. The same formula, the text says, may be made using linseed, mustard, castor or karanja in place of sesame.

That is four more oils. Two written out plus four named substitutions is six — and six is precisely what the closing count declares for the oil column. The arithmetic closes on the nose, and it closes only if the four substitutions are counted as formulas in their own right.

Notice what kind of list the four substitutes make. Linseed, mustard, castor, karanja and sesame are all oilseeds. The slot is not “any liquid” and it is not “sesame or nothing”; it is the oil, and the text hands you five admissible fillers for it. This is the same vocabulary that Vagbhata organises into a whole varga of oils in the Ashtanga Hridaya, where sesame, castor and mustard are each given their own character. The Kalpa Sthana assumes you have that knowledge and simply names the permitted swaps.

One more thing worth saying plainly, because it is easy to miss: the four substitute oils are never written out. Nobody in the eighteen centuries of this text’s transmission needed them to be. The rule was enough.

Eight Ghrtas and the Five Duals

The ghee column behaves the same way and confirms the reading independently, which is what turns a nice observation into something you can rely on.

Chapter 11 gives one elaborate ghrta: the two plants boiled with milk, the ghee then drawn from that milk and everything else discarded, and the ghee afterwards cooked with the paste of the two plants and half parts of trivrt and syama. That is one. Immediately after it comes the sentence discussed earlier — the same preparation may be made with the duals of danti–dravanti, ajasrngi–ajagandha, ksirini–nilika, both types of karanja, and masuravidala–pratyakparni. That is five more.

Then a second, much simpler ghrta: a decoction of sankhini, saptala and amalaki — one of the three fruits Charaka discusses at length elsewhere — singly or together made into a ghee. That is seven. And then the closing half-line of that same passage: a ghrta may also be prepared as with trivrt. Eight.

Two independent columns, two exact closes. Six oils and eight ghrtas, both reachable only by counting rules as items. At that point the reading is no longer a guess about what the compiler meant; it is the arithmetic the compiler left behind for you to check.

The ghee construction itself deserves a note, because it is unusually deliberate. The plants are boiled in milk; the ghee is extracted from that milk; everything except the ghee is thrown away; and only then is the ghee cooked a second time with a fresh paste. The fat is being used as a carrier twice over, in two different states. Vagbhata devotes a whole varga to milk, curd, buttermilk and ghrita for exactly this reason — in classical pharmacy the fat is not a filler, it is a piece of apparatus.

“As Said in the Earlier Chapter”: The Formulas That Are Not Here

Once you start noticing the cross-references, chapter 11 turns out to be built out of them. Three types of linctus, it says, should be prepared as with tilvaka. As in tilvaka, the preparations of wine and of kampillaka should be made. Sauviraka and tusodaka should be prepared as said in the context of danti and dravanti. Chapter 10 ends on the same gesture — a ghee with the latex prepared “as before”, with a bare pointer back to chapter 9.

So the linctus column’s three entries are three cross-references and nothing else. The kampillaka column’s single entry is a cross-reference. The fermented-liquor column’s five entries correspond exactly to the five liquids the chapter names in one line early on — maireya, sour curd-scum, sauviraka, tusodaka and sidhu.

Put the five traceable columns together: 6 oils + 8 ghrtas + 5 liquors + 3 linctus + 1 kampillaka = 23. The declared total is 39. The remainder is 16, which is exactly the figure the chapter gives for the decoction column — the one column it never enumerates.

Where the honest uncertainty is

There are two defensible readings of that sixteen. It may be the eleven fruit juices the chapter lists as vehicles for its opening preparation, plus the five fermented liquids named alongside them — which would make sixteen, but would also mean the five liquors are counted twice. Or the decoction column may run out into the cross-referenced chapters, in which case it cannot be enumerated from chapter 11 at all. The text does not settle it, and this article will not pretend otherwise. What is not in doubt is the oil column and the ghee column, both of which close exactly and both of which require the substitution reading.

Either way, the largest single column in the chapter is the one you cannot count without having read the rest of the Sthana. That is not sloppiness. It is a compendium behaving like a compendium: chapter 11 is written for someone who has already worked through chapters 4 to 10, and it charges them nothing for what they already know.

This is the same structural habit that the Sushruta Samhita catalogues explicitly as tantra yukti — the named technical devices by which a scientific text refers to, compresses and cross-links its own material. Classical authors were not casual about this. They had a vocabulary for it.

Danti and Dravanti: The Root That Is Not Fit for Use as Found

Kalpa Sthana, chapter 12 opens on danti and dravanti and then does something none of the earlier chapters in this run does quite so bluntly.

First it says which roots to take: firm, mature, like an elephant’s tusk, blackish-coppery in colour. That is a normal collection line — the chapter is telling a gatherer what a usable root looks like, in the language of things the gatherer has actually seen.

Then comes the pre-preparation. The collected roots are pasted over, wrapped within earth and kusa grass, heated, and afterwards dried in the sun. And the text gives its reason in one clause: the raw roots of danti and dravanti have a depressant effect, but by exposure to fire and sun this is removed.

The sentence that changes what “processing” means

The chapter does not simply prescribe a procedure. It names a property the raw material has, states that the procedure removes that property, and only then allows the material into a formula. Processing here is not tidying-up or tradition. It is a stated transformation with a stated purpose — and the material is explicitly not fit for use as found.

That single clause is the most modern-sounding thing on these pages. It is the logic of drug preparation as a discipline: this substance, in this state, is unsuitable; do this to it; now it is suitable. The wider bhaishajya kalpana material in the Kalpa Sthana is full of this kind of thinking, and the five basic extraction methods are the same instinct applied to getting a plant into a usable form.

The chapter then gives the character of the drug in the standard vocabulary: sharp, hot, quick-acting and heavy; it dissolves two of the three doshas and aggravates the third. Danti and dravanti are, on the text’s own description, among the most forceful materials in the corpus. Chapter 12 spends most of its length on ways of softening the delivery — in gruels, in soups, in sweet balls, in a stem of sugarcane split lengthwise and closed again over the paste.

Why no quantities, no methods and no indications appear in this article

Chapters 11 and 12 attach dose figures, preparation sequences and lists of conditions to their formulas. None of that is reproduced here, deliberately. These are among the strongest evacuative drugs in the classical corpus; the text itself says the raw root must be altered before it may be used at all, and the entire classical framework places these materials inside the judgement of a trained physician, never in a household. This article describes how the chapter is built. It is scholarly and historical reading, not diagnostic guidance and not a preparation manual. The Third Slot: One Paste, Many Liquids

The base is one slot. The fat is another. The third is the liquid the preparation is given in — and chapter 11 is unusually explicit about how free that slot is.

Its opening preparation is a paste of the two plants with clear wine and salt. The text then names the liquids it may be taken with: the juices of priyala, pilu, karkandhu, kila, amrataka, dadima, draksa, panasa, kharjura, sour jujube and parusaka. Eleven of them. And then a further line: the same formula may also be given in maireya, sour curd-scum, sauviraka, tusodaka or sidhu — and, in the text’s own words, it has the same effects listed above.

That last clause is the interesting one. The chapter is not merely offering alternatives; it is asserting that the swap makes no difference to the outcome. Sixteen liquids, one result. The liquid slot, in this formula, is free.

Chapter 12 then shows you the opposite case. Describing a linctus, it says that for one kind of thirst and one kind of fever the preparation should be made with ajagandha instead of ajasrngi. Here the swap is not free at all: it is keyed to the person in front of you.

Two kinds of slot, and the text marks the difference

Some positions in a classical formula may be filled with anything of the right type — the text says outright that the effect is unchanged. Others are conditioned: the correct filler depends on the case. A Kalpa chapter that only listed recipes could not express this distinction. A chapter written as a grammar can.

The vehicle question is important enough in Charaka that it gets a chapter of its own, and the anupana material in Kalpa Sthana, chapter 7 runs to well over a hundred combinations of drug, vehicle and season. Chapter 11 is drawing on that apparatus rather than restating it — another instance of the same economy.

“Free from Complications”: How the Chapter Ranks Its Own Formulas

Late in chapter 12 there is a powder that the text singles out. It is described as applicable in all seasons and recommended particularly for children and for the old — and the reason it gives is not that the formula is stronger or faster. It is that the formula is free from complications.

A few lines further on, a preparation made into sweet balls is praised on a related ground: it requires no restriction on diet or conduct alongside it.

Stand back and look at what the chapter is measuring there. Not potency. Not speed. The burden the medicine places on the person taking it — how much else it forces them to change, and how safely it sits with the frailest patients in the room. That is the axis on which chapter 12 ranks its own contents, and it is a strikingly humane one for a chapter about the most forceful drugs in the pharmacy.

It is also consistent. The Kalpa Sthana takes the same view elsewhere: madanaphala is commended as the gentlest of the emetic drugs on exactly this reasoning — not because it does the most, but because it does it with the fewest consequences. A pharmacy that ranks by tolerability rather than by force is making a claim about what medicine is for.

Three things chapter 12 tracks that a recipe list could not

Fitness of the raw material — stated, with the processing that fixes it.
Freedom of each slot — whether a substitution is unconditional or keyed to the case.
Burden on the patient — what the preparation demands of the person, not just of the physician.

What a Kalpa Chapter Is Actually For

Put the pieces together and the shape of these two chapters is clear.

A Kalpa chapter is a generative grammar for preparations. It supplies a small number of written constructions, each with typed positions in it. It supplies the admissible fillers for each position — five oilseeds for the oil, six pairs of sharp roots for the base, sixteen liquids for the vehicle. It supplies pointers to constructions defined elsewhere, so that nothing already established has to be restated. And then it audits itself by declaring how many preparations all of that generates, which is a number far larger than the number of paragraphs it took to say it.

Once you see it this way, a long-standing puzzle about classical Ayurveda dissolves. People often notice that the same handful of plants keeps reappearing across hundreds of named formulas and conclude that the tradition is repetitive, or that the formulas are arbitrary variations on a theme. Neither is right. The plants recur because they are fillers for a slot, and the slot recurs because the construction is reusable. What looks like a sprawling list of recipes is a compact set of forms with a substitution table attached.

It also explains why the counts matter enough to audit. If your text is generative, the total is the only honest description of its contents. Counting paragraphs would understate the chapter by a factor of four.

Where this window ends

Chapter 12 continues past the point this article reads it — further preparations, further vehicles, and its own closing count, which is not on these pages. What is described above is chapter 11 in full and chapter 12 through its opening and middle. The closing arithmetic of chapter 12 is left for another reading, and it would be dishonest to state a figure for it here.

There is one last thing these chapters do that is easy to walk past. They are, throughout, written for someone else — someone who has read the earlier chapters, who knows what a linctus is, who can be trusted with “as with trivrt” and will go and look. The compression is a compliment. It assumes a reader, and it assumes a training. Twelve chapters of plants and pots turn out to be, underneath, a document about what one professional may safely leave unsaid to another.

Karanja, Tila and the Base a Modern Label Is Built On

The habit these chapters teach is a useful one to keep when you pick anything off a shelf: ask what the base is, and ask what has been put into it. A classical taila is not defined by what it promises. It is defined by the oil it is built on and the named materials carried in that oil — which is exactly the structure chapter 11 is counting when it lists five admissible oilseeds for a single position.
