The short version
The Kalpa Sthana is the pharmacy manual buried inside the Charaka Samhita, and it is organised around two crowned plants. Chapter 1 names madanaphala the finest of the emetic drugs. Chapter 7 opens with the other coronation: for virechana, purgation, the root of trivrt is regarded as the best one by the learned physicians. What follows is the part almost nobody quotes. Having named a best drug, the text immediately splits it in two by the colour of its root, hands the reddish one to children, the elderly and the delicate, and warns plainly that the blackish one causes confusion, fainting and wasting. From Vamana to Virechana: the Turn Inside the Kalpa Sthana
Most people who read the Charaka Samhita never reach the Kalpa Sthana. It is the seventh of the eight sections, it runs to twelve chapters, and it is not a philosophical book at all. It is a manual for the workroom. Each of its twelve chapters takes one plant and works through the ways that plant can be turned into a usable preparation, and then counts them.
The twelve chapters divide cleanly into two runs. The first six are the emetic plants, used in vamana: madanaphala, jimutaka, ikshvaku, dhamargava, vatsaka and krtavedhana. From the seventh onward the subject changes to the purgative plants, used in virechana, beginning with syama and trivrt and running through chaturangula, tilvaka, sudha, saptala-shankhini and danti-dravanti.
These pages sit exactly on that hinge. They pick up mid-way through chapter 4, close out the emetic run through chapters 5 and 6, then open chapter 7 and the whole purgative half of the book. Read in one sitting they show something no single chapter can: the shape of the editorial plan.
The word kalpa is the thing to get right first. Here it does not mean an aeon, and it does not mean a herb's properties. It means the method by which a raw plant is made into something a physician can actually give. So the question each chapter answers is not "what does this plant do", which is what a modern herb guide asks. It is "how many different things can this plant be made into, and how is each one made".
That distinction is why the chapter endings look so strange to a first-time reader. They end with arithmetic.

How the Dhamargava Kalpa Closes: Inhalation, Anupana and Sixty Formulas
Dhamargava is a bitter gourd of the Luffa group, and by verse 10 the chapter has already been through its decoctions, its milk preparations and its pastes. What is left is the unusual end of the list, and the unusual entries are the interesting ones.
The first is a method for producing emesis without asking the patient to swallow the drug at all. It has two steps, and the first step is not the medicine. He should be saturated with meat soup, milk, gruel and the like. Only then, on a full stomach, does the second step follow: he inhales the flowers of water lily and similar flowers that have been heavily dusted with the powder of dhamargava fruits.
The sequence is worth pausing on because it recurs everywhere in this literature. Saturation comes first, the trigger second. The drug is not being asked to do the whole job, only to finish one a meal has already set up. A reader who skips the first line and keeps the second has misread the method completely.
A reading habit worth borrowing. In the Kalpa Sthana, the sentence before the formula is usually load-bearing. Preparation of the patient, the season, the state of the stomach and the strength of the person are stated as conditions, not as garnish. The formula only makes sense inside them.
Then comes the passage most likely to stop a modern reader. Verses 11 and 12 describe caplets of powdered dhamargava fruit, rolled to the size of a jujube, and specify that they should be dissolved and taken in about 160 millilitres of the juice of cow dung or horse dung. The text then extends the list of possible vehicles to the dung of prsata, rsya and kurnaga — three kinds of deer — and of elephant, camel, mule, sheep, ass and rhinoceros.
There is no way to make that pleasant and no reason to try. Two honest observations sit alongside the distaste. The anupana, the vehicle a preparation is taken with, was treated here as a real variable with its own effects rather than a neutral carrier — the same powder in a different liquid was a different medicine. And a list including rhinoceros is incidentally a note about which animals were within reach of a physician in northern India when the text was compiled. Materia medica doubles as a record of a landscape.
Verses 13 and 14 give a formula worth reading twice, because the text gives the same powder two completely different jobs. The powder is a blend of ten sweet, nourishing herbs — jivaka, rsabhaka, vira, kapikacchu, satavari, kakoli, sravani, meda, mahameda and madhulika — combined with dhamargava. Taken with sugar and honey as a leha, a linctus, it is indicated where there is burning in the chest and cough. Taken with lukewarm water instead, it is indicated where kapha is involved along with aggravated pitta.
Same powder. Two vehicles. Two indications. That is the Kalpa Sthana's central technique stated in miniature, and it is the reason a single plant can generate sixty formulas rather than one.
The remaining entries are quick. A paste taken with a soup of tumburu seeds is described as countering poisons. For disturbances of the mind, one or two fruits are dipped and pressed into a decoction of eleven herbs including jati, haridra and punarnava — the fruit is a carrier here, and the decoction does the work. Finally the fruit is boiled with milk, ghee is extracted, and that ghee is processed further with the phaladi group into a ghrita. And then the chapter counts itself.
Vatsaka Kalpa: Kutaja, and the Seeds Called Indrayava
Chapter 5 opens the way every chapter in this section opens, with a list of alternative names. Vatsaka is also called kutaja, sakra, vrksaka and girimallika — the last meaning something like "jasmine of the hills". Modern botany identifies it with Holarrhena antidysenterica.
Then comes a naming detail that matters more than it looks. The text states separately that the seeds of this plant have their own names: indrayava, or kalingaka. This is not trivia. Classical formulas name the seed independently of the plant, so a reader who knows only "kutaja" will not recognise a formula calling for indrayava, and will read a familiar drug as an unfamiliar one. A great deal of confusion in translated Ayurvedic literature comes from exactly this: one plant with several names and its parts carrying names of their own.

Verse 6 gives the indications, and one clause in it is unlike anything in the preceding chapters. Vatsaka, the text says, destroys raktapitta and kapha; it is indicated in disorders of the heart, in fever, in vatarakta and in erysipelas. So far, ordinary. Then: It is free from harmful effects and as such is useful for the delicate persons.
That is a tolerability rating, and it is doing real editorial work. In a run of chapters mostly devoted to drastic emetics, this plant is flagged as gentle enough for people who cannot take the others. Charaka is not simply listing his emetic drugs; he is grading them by how roughly they act, so a physician facing a frail patient knows where to look. The same instinct crowns madanaphala in chapter 1 and produces the two-colour split of trivrt in chapter 7.
The preparation instructions are short and unusually concrete. The fruits of both plant types are collected when mature and dry, and the seeds are crushed in the quantity that can be held in a closed fist, which this translation glosses at about forty grams. That powder is then impregnated with a decoction of madhuka and the kovidaradi group and left in it for the whole night; in the morning it is pressed out, and salt and honey are added.
Bhavana: the operation that keeps reappearing
The overnight soak has a technical name — bhavana, the impregnation of a powder with a liquid, repeated and dried between rounds. It appears again a few lines later, where vatsaka powder is impregnated with the latex of arka for eight days before it is used at all. Bhavana is the single most characteristic operation in classical Ayurvedic pharmacy: the liquid is not a diluent, it is an ingredient that is being driven into the powder. Two preparations differing only in what they were impregnated with were treated as two different medicines.
The measurement convention deserves a note. A closed fist is not a gram; it scales with the person holding it, as do the handful and the jujube-sized pill. Such measures look imprecise without quite being so, because the physician making the preparation stood in front of the patient it was for — a convention followed in detail in the article on madanaphala and its named measures.
After the bhavana, the rest of the chapter is variations on the vehicle: the impregnated powder with a decoction of jivaka, or of madanaphala, jimutaka, ikshvaku or jivanti, each counted as its own formula; then with mustard water, madhuka water or salt water. And finally the domestic one — the powder simply mixed into krsara, the rice-and-lentil dish we would call khichdi. The drug goes into the meal.
Big Fruits, White Flowers: Charaka's Field Key to Two Kutaja Plants
Between the synonyms and the indications, verse 5 does something the modern reader will recognise immediately even though the vocabulary is unfamiliar. It tells you how to tell two plants apart by looking at them.
The male plant, it says, has big fruits, white flowers and smooth leaves. The female is blackish, with reddish flowers, and both its fruits and their stalks are smaller.
Set aside the male-and-female framing, which is the classical vocabulary for what a botanist would call two varieties or a dimorphism within a species, and what remains is a field identification key: three characters — fruit size, flower colour, leaf surface — checkable standing in front of the plant, without cutting anything open.
Note what the chapter does not do with the distinction. It never tells you to prefer one; the preparation instruction a few lines later says explicitly to use the fruits of both types. The key is not there to help you choose. It is there so a collector knows what is in front of him and does not report one as the other — a quality-control instinct rather than a therapeutic one, and the through-line of the entire Kalpa Sthana: know the material before you process it.
Why this matters for reading old texts. When a classical description spends its words on appearance rather than effect, it is addressed to the person collecting the plant, not the one prescribing it. Charaka's audience included both, and the text switches between them without announcing it.
Krtavedhana Kalpa: Kosataki, the Drum-Fruit for Deep-Seated Disease
Chapter 6 opens with three names for its subject: krtavedhana is also ksveda, kosataki and mrdangaphala. The last is a small pleasure — mrdanga is the barrel drum, and the fruit is named for its shape. Kosataki is the ridge gourd familiar from Indian kitchens, though the variety used here is the bitter one, not the vegetable.
The description of its character is only one line long and it is the most theoretically interesting line in these four chapters:

It is intensely pungent, sharp and hot. It is beneficial in deep-seated diseases such as kustha, anaemia, enlargement of the spleen, swelling, gulma and poisoning.
Three qualities — katu (pungent), tikshna (sharp) and ushna (hot) — and then a class of disorders defined not by organ or by cause but by depth. The translator of this edition breaks his own silence to flag it, adding a bracketed aside about the connection between intense pungency, sharpness and heat on one side and influence on deep-seated disease on the other.
He is right to flag it. The reasoning is not "this plant is indicated for these six conditions", which is how a modern herbal index is organised. It is "this plant has a penetrating quality profile, and penetrating drugs reach what is lodged deep" — tikshna carries the sense of piercing. The indication list is derived from the quality profile rather than accumulated from case reports, and that structure is how this entire pharmacology reasons.

The preparations follow the familiar pattern, with a few notable entries. One or two old and well-dried fruits are given, according to strength — the dose is pinned to the patient's bala, not fixed in advance. A linctus is built by decocting the fruit, combining one part of krtavedhana paste with half a part each of the phaladi drugs, then impregnating that paste with a decoction of the thirteen aragvadhadi drugs, which the text notes may be used separately — thirteen distinct formulas from one method.
Ten preparations use the slimy material from powdered salmali, the silk-cotton tree. A larger formula boils fifty kosataki fruits with a decoction of kovidara and cooks the whole down into a linctus. Then the meat preparations: kosataki cooked with the meat of marshy-land animals into a salted soup, and a second soup using the seeds of the phaladi group. And last, for cough, the gentlest thing in the chapter — kosataki cooked together with sugarcane.
That range, from a drastic drum-shaped gourd to a sugarcane decoction inside one chapter, is exactly what the census verse is about to count.
The Census Verses: Chapters That Audit Their Own Formulas
Every chapter in the Kalpa Sthana ends the same way. Not with a summary of what the plant is good for, but with a tally of how many preparations have been described, broken down by dosage form.
Dhamargava's tally, at chapter 4 verses 19 and 20, reads: nine preparations of tender leaves, four with milk, one in alcohol, twenty in decoction, one in paste, twelve with the juice of cow dung and the like, one with food, one for inhalation, ten linctus preparations, one ghrita. Thus a total of sixty formulas have been described for dhamargava.
Add them up. Nine, four, one, twenty, one, twelve, one, one, ten, one. Sixty exactly.
Vatsaka's tally at chapter 5 verse 12 is shorter and equally exact: nine preparations with decoction, five powder formulas, three water formulas, one krsara formula. Eighteen, and eighteen is what the verse declares.
Why a pharmacy manual counts itself
The census verse is a checksum. The Kalpa Sthana was learned by heart before it was ever read from a page, and a student who could recite a chapter needed some way to know whether he had dropped a formula somewhere in the middle. A total, itemised by dosage form, lets him check his own memory against the text without a teacher present. It is the same reason a ledger carries a column sum.
Which makes the third census interesting. Krtavedhana's tally at chapter 6 verses 13 and 14 lists four preparations in milk, one in alcohol, twenty decoctions, ten slimy formulas, one ghrita, six caplets, eight linctuses, seven meat formulas and one sugarcane-juice formula, and then declares a total of sixty.
Those subtotals, as printed in this English edition, come to fifty-eight.

Every chapter counts its own formulas.
It would be easy to make too much of that, so let us make exactly the right amount. This is one translation of one recension, and the gap could be a line dropped in transmission, a subtotal grouped differently in the Sanskrit than in the English, or a variant reading of the kind that fills the commentarial literature. It is not evidence that the tradition could not add up — the two censuses on either side of it balance to the digit.
What it does show is the value of the convention. You can only notice a discrepancy in a text that supplies a total, and most ancient technical writing does not. Charaka's chapters hand you the means to check them, which is a genuinely unusual editorial choice.
The numbers show one more thing: the chapters are not equal, and are not meant to be. Sixty formulas for dhamargava, sixty for krtavedhana, eighteen for vatsaka. The mild drug gets the shortest chapter. Range of preparation tracks how much a physician was expected to do with the plant.
Trivrt: the Root the Learned Physicians Ranked Best
Chapter 7 changes the subject. The emetics are finished; from here to the end of the section the Kalpa Sthana is about virechana, purgation. And it opens with a judgement:

For purgation, trivrt root is regarded as the best one by the learned physicians.
Read the grammar of that sentence before the content. It does not say "trivrt is best". It says trivrt is regarded as best by the learned physicians. The claim is attributed to a professional consensus rather than asserted by the author. This is a citation convention, and once you notice it you find it throughout the Samhita: where the text is confident it simply states, and where it is reporting a settled view of the field it says so.
Trivrt is standardly identified today with Operculina turpethum, known in English as turpeth or Indian jalap and in Hindi as nishoth. It is a twining plant of the morning-glory family, and it is the root that is used — specifically, as verse 11 will insist, the bark of the root.
With this sentence the architecture of the Kalpa Sthana becomes visible. Chapter 1 crowned madanaphala the finest of the emetics; chapter 7 crowns trivrt the finest of the purgatives. The twelve chapters are not a flat catalogue but two ranked sequences, each headed by a drug the tradition had settled on. If you only ever read two chapters of the Kalpa Sthana, the tradition has told you which two.
Tribhandi, Syama, Suvaha: the Six Names of Trivrt
Verse 4 gives the synonyms — the paryaya list that opens every chapter in this section. Trivrt is also tribhandi, trivrta, syama, kutarana, sarvanubhuti and suvaha.
Two of these repay attention. Sarvanubhuti carries the sense of being universally known or universally experienced — a name that says this drug is in everyone's hands. Suvaha means well-carrying, easy-going, borne without difficulty; it is a name that encodes a temperament, and it will matter in a moment, because the chapter is about to explain that only half of this plant deserves it.
And then there is syama, which means dark or black. Look at the chapter heading: Pharmaceutical Preparations of Syama and Trivrt. The chapter is named for two things, and yet one of them appears inside the other's synonym list.
That tension is real, and the commentarial tradition addressed it by reading syama not as a bare synonym but as the darker of the plant's two forms — precisely the distinction the next verses go on to draw. Whether syama was once a separate drug later absorbed, or always the name of a variety, is a question the commentaries argue and this article cannot settle. What is clear from the page is that by the time the chapter was fixed, the name of the dark one and the name of the whole had become the same word. Kashaya, Ruksha, Katu Vipaka: the Drug That Vitiates Vata
Verses 5 and 6 describe what trivrt is, in the standard four-column vocabulary of classical pharmacology: taste, property, post-digestive taste, and effect on the doshas.

The last row is the important one, and it is important because of what the text does immediately afterwards. It has just named this plant the best purgative in the pharmacopoeia. In the very next breath it states that the drug aggravates one of the three doshas, and it gives the reason: ruksha, roughness, is a vata-increasing quality, and trivrt is rough.
A promotional document does not do this. The text names its best drug's defect in the same paragraph as its crowning.
Then comes the resolution, and it is the intellectual centre of the whole Kalpa Sthana. However, while combined with the drugs alleviating vata, pitta and kapha, and attaining particular pharmaceutical forms, it becomes alleviator of all the diseases.
Why this sentence is the reason the Kalpa Sthana exists
A single drug has a profile, and that profile includes a liability. The classical answer is not to discard the drug and not to ignore the liability. It is to formulate around it — to combine it with counterbalancing drugs and to put it into a particular preparation, and thereby change what it does. Processing is not packaging in this system. Processing is part of the pharmacology. That is why one plant needs sixty formulas, and why an entire section of the Samhita is devoted to how they are made.
That a preparation can correct a raw material's own defect is the same instinct behind adjuvants and excipients in modern pharmacy, and it explains the structure of the five basic preparation methods — juice, paste, decoction, cold infusion and hot infusion — set out in the panchavidha kashaya kalpana. The form is a variable, not a container.
Aruna and Krishna: Two Root Colours, Two Kinds of Patient
Here is the passage that makes this chapter worth the trip. Having named the best purgative and having explained how to formulate around its defect, verses 7 to 9 split the plant in two.
There are, the text says, two types of trivrt root: the blackish and the reddish.

Two roots, two grades, two patients.
The reddish type — aruna — is described as the more important and the more useful, and the text names exactly who it is for: the delicate, children, old patients, and those with soft bowels.
The blackish type is described in language that no marketing document would survive. Because of its drastic nature it causes mental confusion, fainting and wasting. Because of its sharpness it contracts the heart and the throat, and it eliminates the impurity quickly. It is therefore useful, the text concludes, for those carrying a heavy burden of impurity and having hard bowels.
Three things are happening in those two short descriptions, and each of them is remarkable.
First, the text grades its own best drug. It is not enough to know that trivrt is the finest purgative. Two roots pulled from the same plant genus are not interchangeable, and the text says so plainly. The recommendation is not "use trivrt". It is "use the right trivrt".
Second, the adverse effects are printed. Mental confusion, fainting, wasting, constriction of the heart and throat: this is an adverse-effect profile, written into the pharmacopoeia beside the indication, in a text that has already declared the plant the best of its class. The dark variety is not being condemned — it has a use, and the use is given. It is being characterised, honestly, so that a physician can decide.
Third, and most striking, the sorting criterion is the patient. Not the disease. The two grades are assigned by age, by constitution and by the state of the bowel — delicate, child, elderly, soft-bowelled on one side; robust, heavily loaded, hard-bowelled on the other. The same named condition in two different people gets two different grades of the same root.
The one idea to take from this article. Charaka's pharmacy did not stop at choosing the best plant. It chose the best version of the best plant for the person standing in front of the physician — and it wrote down, in the same breath, what the stronger version would do to the wrong person.
This is not personalised medicine in the sense that phrase now carries. It is stratification by constitution and tolerance, applied at the level of the raw material rather than the dose — a sophisticated thing for a pharmacopoeia to do in any century.
Mrdu and Krura Koshtha: Why the Bowel Sets the Grade
The phrase doing most of the work in those verses is the one easiest to skim past: soft bowels and hard bowels. In Sanskrit this is koshtha, and it is a formal classification rather than a casual description.
Classical Ayurveda sorts people into three koshtha types. Mrdu koshtha is the soft type, which responds readily and needs little. Krura koshtha is the hard type, which responds reluctantly and needs more. Madhyama koshtha sits between them. The classification is understood as a stable feature of a person, associated in the classical scheme with the dominance of pitta in the soft type and vata in the hard.
Its entire purpose is dosing. Koshtha tells a physician how much of an eliminative preparation a particular body will require before it responds — and, just as importantly, how little it will take to overshoot. A drug calibrated for a krura koshtha given to a mrdu koshtha is not a mild error.
Which is why verses 7 to 9 read the way they do. The gentle root goes to the soft-bowelled and the frail, the drastic root to the hard-bowelled and heavily loaded, and the criterion is not the illness at all. Preparation of the patient runs on the same logic: the passage immediately following says the person to be purged must be uncted and fomented beforehand. Oleation and sudation come first, as in every eliminative procedure in this literature. The drug is the middle of a protocol, never the whole of it. Bright Fortnight, White Cloth: the Harvest Protocol for Trivrt
Verses 10 and 11 leave the clinic entirely and go out to the field. They describe how the root is to be collected, and the passage can be read two ways at once.
Kalpa Sthana 7, verses 10–11
Their roots should be taken out from the land possessed with good qualities, in the bright fortnight, by one having observed fast, wearing white dress, and with full attention and concentration of mind. The root should be such as deeply penetrated, smooth and straight. This should be cut open and, removing the inner pulp, the bark should be taken, dried and stored for use.

The first reading is the obvious one: this is ritual. Fasting, white cloth, the waxing fortnight and a concentrated mind belong to the vocabulary of religious observance, and collection of medicinal plants in this tradition was a consecrated act. The second reading does not replace the first, and it is worth spelling out, because four of these clauses are specifications a modern raw-material standard would still recognise.
Land possessed with good qualities is provenance. Where a plant grew is a variable, and the text puts it first.
In the bright fortnight is a harvest window. Whatever one makes of the lunar reasoning, the practical effect is that collection happens inside a defined period rather than whenever someone happens to pass the plant.
Deeply penetrated, smooth and straight is a visual grading standard. Three inspectable characters, applied to the root before it is accepted, exactly as a buyer grades a raw material by eye today.
Removing the inner pulp, the bark should be taken is part selection. Not the root — the bark of the root, with the woody core discarded. The active portion is specified, and the rest is waste.
Even the ritual clauses have a plain functional reading available. A collector who has fasted, put on clean white cloth and been told to work with full attention is a collector who is paying attention, and attention is exactly what the three preceding specifications require. Whether the discipline was meant to serve the inspection or the inspection the discipline, the text does not say. Both were in force.
What should be resisted is calling this ancient quality assurance and leaving it there, as though the passage mattered only insofar as it anticipates a modern practice. The honest statement is smaller and firmer: provenance, harvest window, part selection and visual grading are four of the things a raw-material specification still controls, and this passage controls all four. It got the categories right.
A detail easy to miss. The instruction is to dry and store the root bark — laid up in advance, not gathered when a patient arrives. That one word implies a stocked dispensary and someone whose job it is to keep the shelf full.

Read the three census verses again and notice what they are counting by. Not by disease. Not by dosha. By dosage form.

That is the taxonomy that mattered, because the form was understood to change what the plant did. Cutting across all of it are two further variables: bhavana, what the powder was impregnated with, and anupana, what the finished preparation was taken with. Four variables — plant, form, impregnation, vehicle — multiply out to sixty formulas from a single gourd. The census verses are counting the cells of a grid.

What These Chapters Are Not
This needs saying plainly, because the pages just described contain quantities, vehicles and step-by-step methods — the kind of thing a reader might mistake for instructions. They are not instructions. They are a historical record of how a classical pharmacy worked, and this article is a reading of that record.
The plants in these four chapters are drastic. Trivrt is a purgative, and the text itself states that its darker variety causes confusion, fainting and wasting. Dhamargava and krtavedhana are bitter gourds of a kind that are not food, and several of the vehicles described are not substances any modern person should go near. Nothing here is a home preparation.
The text is also explicit that the drug is one step of a supervised sequence: oleation and sudation beforehand, a dose set against that individual's strength and bowel type by a physician who is present, and a graded diet afterwards. Extracting a formula from the middle of that sequence and acting on it is not following the classical method; it is discarding it.

Koshtha classifies a person's bowel tendency into three types: mrdu or soft, madhyama or medium, and krura or hard. In Kalpa Sthana chapter 7 it is one of the two criteria, alongside age and frailty, by which the two grades of trivrt root are assigned.
