The short version
A marma is a place on the body where flesh, vessel, ligament, bone and joint meet — mamsa, sira, snayu, asthi and sandhi. The classical count is 107. The Bhavaprakasha, in its Purva Khanda, reproduces the full list, and reading it straight through reveals something the usual summaries leave out.
The text does not sort the body by what a place is made of. It sorts it by what happens to you, and how long it takes. Sadyo-maraka: death at once. Kalantara-maraka: death later, by a named route. Vaikalya-kara: you live. And the class that carries forty-four of the hundred and seven — the largest of the five — is the one you survive. For each of those forty-four the text does not say “serious”. It names the exact function you do not get back: hearing at Vidhura, a still head at Krikatika, a liftable arm at Amsa, sensation below the waist at Kukundara. Where the Marma Section Sits in the Bhavaprakasha
The Bhavaprakasha is a sixteenth-century compendium by Bhava Mishra, and it is the youngest of the works usually grouped as the Laghu Trayi, the lesser triad. Most readers meet it through its Nighantu, the long materia medica section that names and describes plants. Fewer readers go through the Purva Khanda, the first division, which sets out the groundwork — cosmology, embryology, anatomy, the dhatus, the channels — before any material is discussed at all.
The pages this article follows sit inside that anatomical run. They come immediately after the section on artava and the qualities that exceed the dhatus, and they consist almost entirely of a list: place after place on the body, each one named, sized, classified and given a consequence. This is the marma material.
Bhava Mishra is not inventing here, and does not pretend to be. The marma scheme belongs to the Sushruta Samhita, whose Sharira Sthana devotes its whole sixth chapter — Sharira Sthana, chapter 6, the Pratyeka-marma-nirdesha-shariram — to enumerating the points one at a time. That is the same division of the same work whose first chapter defines what a person is and whose second chapter judges a case by smell. Vagbhata compresses the same material into Ashtanga Hridaya, Sharira Sthana chapter 4, the Marma-vibhaga. What the Bhavaprakasha does is carry that scheme forward across a thousand years into a late compendium — verse, then a bhasha commentary in Hindi that restates each entry in plain words for a reader who is no longer fluent in the older idiom.
That commentary layer is why these particular pages are worth reading rather than summarising. Where the Sanskrit says chaturangulam sadyo marakam and moves on, the commentary stops and spells out where the place is, how wide it is, and what follows. It is a classical text explaining itself to a later audience, which is a rare thing to be able to watch.

The unit is a finger. Whose finger is the whole point.
What a Marma Is: Mamsa, Sira, Snayu, Asthi and Sandhi
The definition the tradition gives is structural, and it is worth taking literally. A marma is a site of sannipata — a coming-together — of five things: mamsa (flesh or muscle), sira (vessels), snayu (ligaments and sinews), asthi (bone) and sandhi (joint). It is not defined as an organ. It is not defined as an energy centre. It is defined as a junction, a place where several different kinds of tissue are crowded into a small volume with nothing spare around them.
Three of those five are also dhatus in their own right — mamsa, asthi and the rest of the seven tissues — and the Bhavaprakasha counts and describes them at length elsewhere in the same Purva Khanda, which is what makes the marma list legible: its vocabulary has already been defined a few sections earlier.
Every marma is then labelled by whichever of those five predominates at that spot, which gives the five structural classes:

Eleven, forty-one, twenty-seven, eight and twenty. They add to 107, and that identity is not decorative — it is how the classical enumeration checks itself. The same total has to fall out of the regional division and out of the prognostic division as well, and if it does not, a name has gone missing in transmission. A list that can be cross-footed three separate ways is a list built to survive being copied by hand.
Why a junction, and not an organ
Ancient anatomies elsewhere tend to be lists of parts. The marma scheme is a list of relations — of places where parts are packed too close. That choice has a consequence the text is explicit about: a marma is dangerous not because of what it contains but because of what it has no room for. There is no slack at a junction. Everything that passes through has to pass through together.
Marma Pramana: The Ruler Is the Patient's Own Finger
Every entry in this list carries a size, and the unit is always the same: the angula, a finger-breadth. Hridaya is chaturangula, four. Janu and Kurpara are three. Stanamula and Indravasti are two. Vitapa and Kakshadhara are one. A long tail of the list — Kshipra, Brihati, Nitamba, Katikataruna, Vidhura, Krikatika, Amsa, Kukundara, Lohitaksha, Ani, Parshvasandhi — is ardhangula, half a finger.
It is easy to read past that as quaint. It is not quaint. It is the single most sophisticated design decision in the whole scheme, and it is a decision about whose body the map is of.
Ayurvedic measurement of the person uses sva-angula — the subject's own finger-breadth. Charaka sets the principle out in the Vimana Sthana, chapter 8, where pramana, proportion, is one of the ten heads under which a person is to be examined, and the measure of the body is taken in that person's own anguli. A tall adult and a small child are both measured with the ruler each of them is carrying.
So the marma map is not a printed chart with fixed centimetres. It is a set of proportional statements that resolve differently on every body, and resolve correctly on all of them. Half an angula on a large frame is a bigger patch of skin than half an angula on a small one, and the text intends exactly that. A scheme written down in the first millennium remains usable in the sixteenth century, and in this one, because it never committed to a length.
The detail most summaries drop
Modern retellings of marma almost always give the count, 107, and the five prognostic classes. They almost never give the pramana — the size in angula attached to each individual point. But in the Bhavaprakasha's own text the size is not an afterthought: it appears in the same breath as the name and the class, in nearly every single entry. Whatever else the list is, it is a list of measured areas, not of dots.
Sadyo-Maraka: Hridaya, Vasti and Nabhi, Four Angula Each
Sadyah means at once, immediately. Maraka means causing death. The sadyo-maraka or sadyah-pranahara marmas are the places where injury is not survivable and the outcome is not delayed. The classical count for this class is nineteen.
Three of them dominate the page, and the Bhavaprakasha groups them as a set:
- Hridaya — the heart. Placed, in the commentary's own words, in the chest between the breasts, at the door of the amashaya. Classed as a sira marma. Size: four angula. Sadyo marakam.
- Vasti — the bladder, in the lower abdomen, described by its position among the surrounding structures and as having a single downward-facing opening. Classed as a snayu marma. Size: four angula. Sadyo marakam.
- Nabhi — the navel, placed between pakvashaya and amashaya, described as the place from which the siras arise. Classed as a sira marma. Size: four angula. Sadyo marakam.
The same three appear together elsewhere in the corpus with a name of their own. Charaka gives them a dedicated chapter twice over — Trimarmiya Chikitsa at Chikitsa Sthana 26, and Trimarmiya Siddhi at Siddhi Sthana 9 — built around trini marmani, three marmas: hridaya, basti and murdha, the head. Charaka's triad and the Bhavaprakasha's page are not identical — Charaka's third member is the head where these lines give the navel — but the shape of the judgement is the same. Out of a hundred and seven places, a very small number are in a category of their own, and the whole tradition agrees on which region they occupy: the centre of the trunk and the top of the body.
Note also what the four-angula figure is doing. These three are the largest areas on the map. The most dangerous places are also the widest, which means they are the hardest to avoid by accident and the least dependent on precision. A scheme that made its lethal points small and its harmless points large would be a scheme for specialists. This one is the other way round.

A category of its own, held well clear of everything else on the map.
Kalantara-Maraka: The Thirty-Three That Take Their Time
Kala is time; kalantara is after an interval. The kalantara-maraka class covers injuries that are also fatal, but not immediately — and the text's interest is in the route. It does not merely mark the point dangerous. It states the mechanism by which the interval is filled.
Read straight, this is the most striking stretch of the whole section, because the commentary enumerates the class explicitly. Its tally runs: the chest, eight; Simanta, five; Tala, four; Kshipra, four; Indravasti, four; Brihati, two; Parshvasandhi, two; Katikataruna, two; Nitamba, two.

That is thirty-three. And thirty-three is exactly the classical count of the kalantara-pranahara class in the Sushruta enumeration. The Bhavaprakasha does not announce the number anywhere on these pages — it simply lists the members, and the arithmetic lands on the canonical figure with nothing left over. A late compendium reproducing a much older scheme without visible loss is a small piece of evidence about how well the transmission held.

The vocabulary of those routes is the ordinary vocabulary of the system: kapha and vata filling a cavity, and the koshtha that the same compendium describes elsewhere as the seat of digestion. Nothing new is introduced to explain an injury.
Look at the fourth column as a column. Kapha filling a cavity. Vata filling a cavity. Blood filling a cavity. Blood running out. Pain. Convulsion. Suppuration. Wasting. These are not nine ways of saying “it is bad”. They are nine different processes, and each one is attached to a specific place for a reason that follows from what is at that place. Apastambha lies on the vata-carrying channels of the chest, so the route named there is vata filling the koshtha. Indravasti sits in the belly of the forearm and calf, thick with vessels, so the route is blood loss. Katikataruna and Nitamba are on bone near the marrow-rich pelvis, so the routes are pallor and wasting.
The classification is doing real work. It is not a severity rating pasted on afterwards; it is an argument from local structure to expected course.

How 107 Adds Up: Five Classes, Five Structures, Four Regions
Before the third class, it is worth laying the whole arithmetic out, because it is the reason this material survived intact. The 107 marmas are partitioned three separate and independent ways, and all three partitions total the same number.

By region: the four limbs, shakha, carry 44, eleven in each; the trunk carries 12; the back, prishtha, carries 14; and the region above the collarbone, urdhva-jatru, carries 37 — once more 107.
Three keys to the same lock
A single list of 107 names is fragile. Three overlapping partitions of the same 107 are not: drop one name and two of the three totals go wrong, and the position of the fault is immediately visible. This is the same conservation instinct that runs through classical Sanskrit technical writing generally — the redundancy is not padding, it is the error-checking, and it is why a hand-copied list can travel a thousand years without silently losing a member.
The vishalyaghna class of three deserves one sentence, because it is the strangest category in the scheme and is not represented in the pages under discussion. Shalya is an embedded foreign object; vishalya is its removal. These are the points at which the patient is stable while the object remains in place and dies when it is withdrawn — the object itself being what holds the injury closed. That an ancient surgical tradition set aside a named category for injuries made worse by the intervention is not a small thing.
Vaikalya-Kara: The Largest Class Is the One You Survive
Now the number that should be the headline of every account of marma and almost never is.
Vaikalya is deformity, disability, being rendered incomplete. Vaikalya-kara marmas are the ones where the person does not die. And there are forty-four of them — more than the nineteen that kill at once and the eight that produce pain put together, more than any other single class, and more than a third of the entire scheme.
The Bhavaprakasha announces them in a verse that simply strings the names together: Lohitaksha, Ani, Janu, Urvi, Kurcha, Vitapa, Kurpara, Kukundara, Kakshadhara, Vidhura, Krikatika, Amsa, Amsaphalaka, Apanga, Nila, Manya, Phana, and the two Avarta. Then the prose goes back and takes them one at a time, giving each a location, a structural class, a size in angula, and — this is the part that matters — a specific named loss.
Count the pairs as the text gives them and the total resolves cleanly. Lohitaksha four, Ani four, Janu two, Urvi four, Kurcha four, then Vitapa, Kurpara, Kukundara, Kakshadhara, Vidhura, Krikatika, Amsa, Amsaphalaka, Apanga, Nila, Manya, Phana and Avarta at two apiece. Four plus four plus two plus four plus four is eighteen; thirteen pairs is twenty-six; eighteen and twenty-six is forty-four. The verse and the count agree exactly.
The find
An ancient text that is usually described as a chart of “lethal points” spends its largest single class on people who live. And for each of those forty-four it declines to say “serious” or “grave”. It names the one function that does not come back. That is not a danger map. It is a prognosis table, and its longest column is the column about the rest of somebody's life.

It held together. It is simply no longer unmarked.
Vidhura, Krikatika, Amsa, Kukundara: A Named Loss for Every Point

The remaining names on the verse list — Apanga, Nila, Manya, Phana and the two Avarta, all clustered in the head and neck — are announced in the same verse and their descriptions run on past the end of the pages examined here.
Read the last column downward and the character of the list becomes unmistakable. Deafness. A head tremor. An arm that will not lift. An elbow that will not straighten. Loss of touch below the waist. Trembling feet. Lameness. A wasted thigh. These are not abstractions. They are the specific, ordinary, permanent things that a person notices every day for the rest of their life, and the text names them one by one rather than grading them on a scale.
Two of those entries lean on ideas the compendium has already built. Vitapa's alpa-shukrata only means something because the Purva Khanda has already explained what shukra is and where it sits; Kurcha's trembling and Kshipra's convulsion sit in the same register as the vayus that govern movement. The marma list is a late chapter in a book that has already laid its own foundations.
Kukundara is the entry that most repays a second look. Two half-angula patches beside the spine, in the shallow hollows over the buttocks, and the consequence given is loss of the sense of touch below and loss of voluntary movement. That is a compressed, accurate observation about the spinal cord recorded as a location and an outcome, without any theory of nerves at all. Vidhura is the same kind of note: a half-angula hollow behind the ear, and the loss is hearing. Nothing about the mechanism, everything about the correspondence.
What the sizes tell you about the class
Nearly the whole vaikalya-kara list is half an angula, with only the two great joints — Janu and Kurpara at three — and Urvi, Vitapa and Kakshadhara at one being larger. Compare the sadyo-maraka group at four angula each. The pattern across the whole scheme is consistent: the deadlier the class, the wider the area. The places that end a life are broad and central; the places that change a life are small and peripheral, mostly at joints and in hollows.
Simanta: The Head Joints, and the Entry That Is Not About a Limb
One kalantara-maraka entry sits oddly among the rest, and it is worth separating out.
Simanta is the name for the sutures of the skull — shirasi yatra sandhayah, where in the head there are joints. There are five, they are sandhi marmas, and their size is given as four angula: the same figure as Hridaya, Vasti and Nabhi, and the largest in the entire kalantara class. Every other member of that class is given a physical route — a cavity filling, blood escaping, tissue wasting. Simanta is given something else. The consequence recorded is unmada, bhaya, and the destruction of chitta.
Derangement. Fear. The undoing of the mind. In a list otherwise made entirely of flesh, vessel, bone and blood, one entry — and it is the entry over the skull — reports its outcome in the vocabulary of the mind rather than the body. The text does not comment on the difference. It simply records that at this location the thing that alters is not a limb.
Whether the compilers of this scheme intended a claim about the relation of head and mind is not something the page settles, and it would be dishonest to insist on more than the page says. What the page does say is that the observation was made, was assigned a location and a measurement like every other entry, and was transmitted unchanged into a sixteenth-century compendium alongside the rest.
What a Marma List Is Actually For
It helps to be clear about the setting, because it is easy to import a modern one by mistake.
This material sits in the Sharira Sthana — the division on the body — of a surgical tradition, and its original readers were people who cut, and people who had to give an opinion about an injury someone else had caused. In that setting a list like this answers three practical questions. Where must an incision not go? When an injury has already happened at a known place, what is the expected course? And in a scheme with named classes and named outcomes, how does a practitioner say something precise about the future rather than something vague about the present?
That third one explains the shape of the whole thing. The classification is prognostic, not descriptive. Everything the text bothers to record about a marma is in service of a statement about what comes next: whether death is immediate or delayed, whether it arrives by a cavity filling or by blood running out, whether the person lives and, if so, exactly what they will be without.
It also sits in a compendium that is unusually consistent with itself. The Bhavaprakasha's account of how one tissue feeds the next and its treatment of the five elements the body is built from are the same voice, working at different scales, in the same division of the same book.
Which is also why the map has aged the way it has. The anatomy in it is of its period. The commitment underneath it — that you should tell someone what to expect, specifically, and in their own units of measurement — has not dated at all.
Four things to take from these pages
One. A marma is defined as a junction of five tissues, not as an organ. Two. Its size is always given, and always in angula — the measured body is the patient's own. Three. The classes are about outcome and elapsed time, not about anatomy. Four. Everything above is a reading of an old book about how a body is put together. It is history and structure, not instruction, and nothing in it describes anything to be done to a person. The section that follows changes subject completely.
Murdha-Taila and Udvartana: What the Same Texts Do Daily Over This Surface
The same classical corpus that maps the body this closely also has a great deal to say about the most ordinary thing a person does with it, which is looking after the outside of it every morning.
Dinacharya, the daily routine, sets out a handful of external practices that are simply part of the day: abhyanga, oil applied over the body; murdha-taila, oil on the head; and udvartana, a paste or powder rubbed over the skin. They are routine, they are external, and they are entirely separate from the classification above. Three things on our shelf belong to those three habits, described by what they are made of and nothing else.
Panchagavya Twacha Shodhak Tel — a body oil, for abhyanga
An external oil built on Narikela Taila, coconut oil, as its carrier base, with Go Ghrita — cow's ghee — among its materials. Ghee as a sneha for the skin, twak, is a classical designation, and the ingredient list is where that word actually appears. By prognosis: 19 sadyah-pranahara, 33 kalantara-pranahara, 3 vishalyaghna, 44 vaikalya-kara and 8 rujakara. By structure: 11 mamsa, 41 sira, 27 snayu, 8 asthi and 20 sandhi. By region: 44 in the four limbs, 12 in the trunk, 14 in the back and 37 above the collarbone. All three partitions total 107, which is how a hand-copied list of names checks itself for loss.
What does the Bhavaprakasha say about marma? +
The Bhavaprakasha's Purva Khanda reproduces the full classical marma scheme in its anatomical section, in verse followed by a bhasha commentary in Hindi that restates each entry in plain language. It gives, for each point, the name, the location, the structural class, the size in angula and the consequence. Bhava Mishra, writing in the sixteenth century, is transmitting the scheme of the Sushruta Samhita rather than proposing a new one, and the fidelity is high: the members of the kalantara class listed there add up to exactly the canonical 33.
What is the difference between sadyo-maraka and kalantara-maraka marma? +
Time. Sadyah means at once, so a sadyo-maraka or sadyah-pranahara marma is one where injury is fatal immediately; there are 19. Kalantara means after an interval, so a kalantara-maraka marma is one where injury is also fatal but the outcome is delayed; there are 33. The classical texts go further than the timing and name the route for each delayed case, such as the koshtha filling with vata at Apastambha, loss of blood at Indravasti, or wasting of the lower body at Nitamba.
What are the vaikalya-kara marma? +
Vaikalya means deformity or being rendered incomplete, so the vaikalya-kara marmas are the ones where the person survives the injury but keeps a lasting loss of function. There are 44 of them, which makes this the largest of the five prognostic classes, larger than the fatal-at-once class and the pain class combined. The names include Lohitaksha, Ani, Janu, Urvi, Kurcha, Vitapa, Kurpara, Kukundara, Kakshadhara, Vidhura, Krikatika, Amsa, Amsaphalaka, Apanga, Nila, Manya, Phana and Avarta. For each one the text names the particular function that is lost rather than grading the injury.
What is an angula, and why are marma measured in it? +
An angula is a finger-breadth. Marma sizes in the classical lists run from half an angula to four angula, and the unit matters because Ayurvedic measurement of a person uses sva-angula, that person's own finger. Charaka sets the principle out in Vimana Sthana chapter 8, where pramana or proportion is one of the heads under which a patient is examined and the body is measured in the patient's own anguli. The effect is that the marma scheme is proportional rather than absolute, so it resolves correctly on a large frame and a small one alike.
What are the three marma that Charaka singles out? +
Charaka gives a dedicated chapter to trini marmani, three marmas, twice over: Trimarmiya Chikitsa at Chikitsa Sthana chapter 26 and Trimarmiya Siddhi at Siddhi Sthana chapter 9. The three are hridaya, basti and murdha, the head. The Bhavaprakasha pages discussed here group hridaya, vasti and nabhi as a set of four-angula sadyo-maraka points, so the two groupings are not identical, but both single out a very small number of central sites from the full list of 107.
What are the five structural types of marma? +
Mamsa marma, where flesh predominates, 11 of them. Sira marma, where vessels predominate, 41. Snayu marma, ligaments and sinews, 27. Asthi marma, bone, 8. Sandhi marma, joint, 20. The label records which of the five tissues dominates at that junction, and it often explains the prognosis attached to the same point: bone-dominant sites such as Katikataruna and Nitamba are given routes involving pallor and wasting, while vessel-dominant sites such as Indravasti are given routes involving loss of blood.
Which marma does the Bhavaprakasha place in the head? +
Simanta, named for the sutures of the skull, shirasi yatra sandhayah. There are five, they are classed as sandhi marmas, and their size is given as four angula, the largest in the kalantara class and equal to hridaya, vasti and nabhi. Simanta is unusual because every other entry in its class is given a physical route, whereas the consequence recorded for Simanta is unmada, bhaya and destruction of chitta. Krikatika and Vidhura, in the head and neck, belong instead to the vaikalya-kara class.
What do the classical marma chapters actually describe? +
An anatomical and prognostic scheme, and nothing else. What the Sushruta Samhita, the Ashtanga Hridaya and the Bhavaprakasha set out in these chapters is where the junctions are, which tissue predominates at each, how large each one is in angula, and what is expected to follow if one is injured. The setting is surgical: the chapters are written for people making judgements about wounds. They contain no procedure of any kind, and this article describes none. Modern hands-on practices that borrow the vocabulary are a separate and much later development, outside the scope of these pages entirely.
